Natalie Portman's New Movie 'The Other Woman': Trailer And Synopsis (VIDEO)

First Posted: 12/28/10 08:09 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:20 PM ET

Natalie Portman will soon be learning how to be a mom in real life. First, she had to learn to do it on the big screen.

Portman, who announced yesterday that she is engaged to 'Black Swan' partner Benjamin Millepied and pregnant with his child, stars in the upcoming film, 'The Other Woman,' though she must hope that her character's travails far exceed what life has in store for her in the real world.

Portman plays an office assistant that has an affair with her boss that ends up in him divorcing his first wife and marrying her. The film centers on the loss of Portman's newborn child, and the rocky road she faces in creating a bond with her young step-son.

The film, based on Ayelet Waldman's novel 'Love and Other Impossible Pursuits,' has an interesting release strategy (though perhaps less unusual for a small independent film): it will be available On Demand on television on New Year's Day, and will hit theaters in a limited release on February 4th.

Portman also will star this coming spring in 'Your Highness,' a medieval-set action comedy -- a bit of a departure from this heavier material. View that trailer here.

I'm hoping there is a message in this movie (moral to the story) and not just a voyeuristic perspective of this painful cliche.

Finally, Scott Cohen get's some play as one of H-wood's most talented leading men. A great actor and sexy.

None of us know anything about the character, the wife, in the movie, or the state of the marriage as portrayed in a movie, so we cannot automatically diss the character of Natalie Portman as a "homewrecker". She certainly does not look the role of a femme fatale. I reserve my judgement on all this until I see the movie and the whole underlying plot and all the characters. It's a movie. Portman is acting in a role.

In her real life, none of us know the nature, extent, and viability of the relationship in which fiance was in. I reserve judgement on that, too, if I even will judge. Again, she is not a femme fatale, nor much taken to less than substantial conduct of her life. She seems an intelligent, thoughtful, authentic, kind of person.

I'm not sure how I would react if I found out my husband had been unfaithful, or if he wanted to leave me for another woman. I do know that we don't own each other, and that people sometimes grow apart. I hope I love him enough that I would want his happiness. I don't believe in infidelity, but I know that, although I would miss him terribly, it wouldn't ruin my life if my husband left me. It would probably ruin his, though.

I liked your post. It is refreshing to hear you say that as opposed to what most people say "if he cheats I'm out the door!". LOL.

My sister and her 3 little boys have recently had their lives destroyed by just such an affair between their father and a younger woman he worked with, so I'm with kuwaitamoment. I don't WANT to understand women who poach men from their families and I certainly don't want to a watch a movie that plays these women up as some kind of tragic heroines.

I saw the trailer and had the same thinking. We're supposed to feel sorry and sympathize with the Nat. Portman character? She's most women's worst nightmare!

That little kid said "Natalie.....are you an angel? They live on the moons of Iago"

This movie sounds horrible. An On demand TV release and then limited release? in Feb? Why is Natalie Portman making this kind of movie? She's not Lindsay Lohan.

Well, since I just saw the entire plot in the trailer, I don't see any reason to see the film.

Talk about giving away the farm. . .

Noticed that too. Because I am noticing it in 80% of movie trailers these days.

There is a 2:30 second limit on trailers established by the MPAA. The game these days is, "how much can I reveal about the movie's plot in 2:30?"

The trailer alone gives several compelling reasons not to divorce in order to marry the secretary.

It's nice to see Scott Cohen get the chance at a leading role; he's been an underrated actor for some time now . It's also good seeing Lisa Kudrow stretching to a dramatic role. It looks like a good picture

I still wish she had a more expressive face.

She should have never kissed Mila Kunis in the Swan deal. It just wont ever get any better than that.

"The Other Woman". How perfectly fitting, Nat.

Have to say I was saddened when I learned her new fiance' was in a committed relationship when he and Portman hooked up; just takes the magic out of their new union. I'm so bummed.

A case of a woman betraying another woman. I thought Natalie was a feminist.

So she snagged a guy who's capable of cheating. Wow. That's a real winner.
