Outgoing Democratic Congressman John Hall Warns Citizens United Could Lead To 'Fascism'

John Hall Citizens United Fascism

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 12/29/10 06:02 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:20 PM ET

Rep. John Hall (D-N.Y.), who is leaving Capitol Hill after being defeated by Republican challenger Nan Hayworth, recently warned that with the massive changes to campaign finance law prompted by the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision, the nation could soon descend into fascism.

"The country was bought," Hall told The New York Observer in an exit interview. "I learned when I was in social studies class in school that corporate ownership or corporate control of government is called Fascism. So that's really the question -- is that the destination if this court decision goes unchecked?"

Hall then placed the blame on the political leanings of specific justices.

"The extremist, most recent two appointees to the Supreme Court, who claimed in their confirmation hearings before the Senate that they would not be activist judges, made a very activist decision in that it overturned more than a century of precedent," Hall explained. "And as a result there were millions of extra dollars thrown into this race."

While Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the most junior member of the bench at the time of the ruling, was on the dissenting and eventually unsuccessful end of the decision, Hall is likely referring to Bush appointees Samuel Alito and John Roberts, both of whom favored allowing corporations to anonymously funnel unlimited amounts of cash into political elections.

Hall was a strong supporter of the DISCLOSE Act earlier this year, a failed piece of legislation that included provisions to limit the potential influence of foreign-controlled corporations on U.S. elections.

Hall told The Observer that he had specific qualms with the misleadingly named political action groups that have cropped up in the wake of the decision.

"We are talking about supposedly wholesome names like Revere America, American Crossroads, Americans for Apple Pie and Motherhood -- if somebody hasn't trademarked that one I probably should. The fact is you can call it anything and the money could be coming from BP or Aramco or any corporation domestic or foreign," Hall said.

The Observer reports that there is some talk of Hall taking a job with the Obama administration, or perhaps with newly-elected New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, though the outgoing congressman has yet to announced any official plans.

I'm not so sure about this "soon descend into fascism". So many elements of it are already in place, and it is in the interests of the corporatists to obfuscate that fact as long as possible. We might not be able to tell well enough for people to agree it is a fact, and therefore not act. I think there is real danger arising from how much we don't know because of the lack of transparency of so much of government and what happens behind the curtain. We might not be able to tell when we hit bottom.

Did he go to a "special" school?
Maybe he ought to bother looking up fascism in a dictionary, or even trouble wikipedia for the answer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fascism.
Obviously the poor man cannot distinguish between corporatism as a (philosophical) concept and corporate as an adjective.
Just as well he's leaving the hill, cos he's quite evidently not fit for the job.

Charles Lewis, the founder of the Center for Public Integrity, a nonpartisan watchdog group, said, “The Kochs are on a whole different level. There’s no one else who has spent this much money. The sheer dimension of it is what sets them apart. They have a pattern of lawbreaking, political manipulation, and obfuscation. I’ve been in Washington since Watergate, and I’ve never seen anything like it. They are the Standard Oil of our times.”

Citizens United: a case in which the US government spent a LOT of YOUR money in order to CENSOR FREE SPEECH.

It was about a documentary about Hillary Clinton. Ooh, scary!

Since Congress "shall make no laws abridging the freedom of speech," the FEC lost due to basic logic.

But I can see how free speech is exactly the same as fascism. Oh, wait.

Impeach Roberts for subversion and perjury. Wipe that smile from his totalitarian mug.

Of course, the alternatives are much worse. We right the course of ship America the simplest, least bloody way possible. Impeach the person who delivered fascism to America.

Fascism is obamacare.
Fascism is being hamstrung by endless government meddling.
Fascism is the government takeover of the internet.

Fascism is already here. It simply has yet to take off its sheep's clothing.
When the new majority gets to Washington later this month and begins by emptying Social Security to "balance the budget" it will be seen for what it is--highway robbery.

"Shall NOT be infringed" means what it says.

Let's get real - the first amendment says "Congress shall make now law abridging the freedom of speech or of the press." Campaign finance infringes on free speech, it's unconstitutional.  Citizens United did nothing all that revolutionary and the notion that it could lead to fascism is a joke.  Why? Because even during McCain-Feingold, corporations which had the money could simply either fund PACS or they could form subsidiaries that were "press" companies.  No one seems to be able to point to any actual harm that CU has created - likely because it did no more than reaffirm the rule many states had before the case arose.  It's a nothing issue.

"Citizens United" was one of the VERY worst decisions handed down by the SCOTUS in the last hundred years. (Even HONEST conservatives will tell you so.) It essentialy declared that the United States government and with it, its foreign and economic policies, were for sale to the highest bidder.

The ONLY possible solution is publicly funded political campaigns. NO MORE PRIVATE MONEY FROM ANYBODY. This is the only way to once again be reasonably certain that the government represents the electorate instead of the special interests.

I suspect that even if public funding were to be achieved, it would not eliminate the MSM's subtle and manipulative messaging, deceptive advertising, spin and lies of omission made possible by elimination of the Dairness Doctrine, facilitated by the FCC and cemented by SCOTUS.

I'm with you on this one, but I have to agree that publicly funded campaigns are not a complete solution as long as the corporatists control the MSM.

There are at least three supreme court justices that could lead to fascism.
03:17 PM on 01/01/2011
Hall is absolutely right on the money.

Fascism should more appropriately be called Corporatism because it is a merger of state and corporate power.
Benito Mussolini

Mussolini also equated fascism as more religion than doctrine which why I believe the push toward fascism will come shrouded in christian fundamentalism.

As nightfall does not come all at once, neither does oppression. In both instances, there is a twilight when everything remains seemingly unchanged.
And it is in such a twilight that we all must be aware of change in the air - however slight - lest we become the unwitting victims of the darkness.
