Kilgore Independent School District Sued By 'Outed' Student Softball Player Skye Wyatt

For some, it takes three strikes and they're out. For others, the play is already made before stepping up to bat.

Two East Texas high school softball coaches are accused of revealing a student's sexual orientation to her mother and then kicking the student off the school team, reports KLTV.

Both the mother and daughter filed a lawsuit Monday seeking damages.

Skye Wyatt of Kilgore High School claims softball coaches Rhonda Fletcher and Cassandra Newell locked her in a locker room to interrogate her regarding her sexual relationship with another girl.

When Wyatt denied accusations of spreading gossip about one of the coaches, the lawsuit states that Fletcher and Newell began to yell and physically threaten her.

"S.W. was very afraid and feared they might strike her."

After the confrontation, Wyatt claims the coaches called her mother and revealed her sexual orientation.

When the mother filed complaints to the school regarding the conduct of the teachers, the lawsuit describes the Kilgore Independent School District justifying the coaches' actions, replying that school officials were "legally obligated to share this information with the parent."

Attorneys with the Texas Civil Rights Project, a grassroots legal assistance program created by Oficina Legal del Pueblo Unido, are working with Wyatt. The program provides representation for low-income and minority victims dealing with social justice and discrimination issues.

Jim Harrington of the Texas Civil Rights Project recently spoke with Houston Press sports blog, Hair Balls:

"We want to change the way they do business in Kilgore. They have to learn to respect the rights of the students."

Barbara Wyatt, Skye's mother, talked to KLTV about her daughter's experience. She hopes to set a precedent through the case's ruling.

"Kids commit suicide over it. If we don't want to continue to lose our children to these types of issues, then we have to do some changing."
