From National Geographic:

National Geographic announced Aaron Lim Boon Teck of Singapore as the winner of its 2010 National Geographic Photography Contest. Lim Boon Teck will have his winning image of the eruption of Indonesia's Gunung Rinjani volcano published in worldwide editions of National Geographic magazine. In addition, he will receive $10,000 (USD) -- the first monetary prize ever offered by National Geographic magazine for its annual photo contest -- and a trip to National Geographic headquarters in Washington, D.C., to participate in the annual National Geographic Photography Seminar in January 2011.

More than 16,000 photographs were submitted to the contest, with both professional photographers and amateur photo enthusiasts across the globe participating. Photographs were submitted in three categories: people, places and nature.

Mindblowing
On June 2009, my friends and I planned to trekked Gunung Rinjani. Our plans were foiled due to the eruption & we can only trek to the crater rim. This was what I saw when I was there. Trekkers whom were able to make it up to the crater rim on time are able to camp overnight to witness the eruption whole night long. I wanted to share with everyone this experience of seeing many elements going on at a particular point in time, that is many trekkers beholding the sight of a volcanic eruption as the sun slowly rises from behind Rinjani on the left & the moon setting on the right (provided by photographer). Teck won the grand prize in this year's photo contest. His photo will be published in National Geographic magazine. CLICK HERE to see more submitted photos and download wallpaper.

I looked at the lion again. He looks like a scruffy old lion, his best days gone. He no longer has to compete. It's in his eyes.

The lion wishes he was back home in Africa competing for a pride, spraying his scent around the savanna not sitting in some Indonesian park. He's not a lion anymore. Anyone who has watched a Dereck & Beverly Joubert lion video knows the difference.

They are all excellent pictures. But the Supercell photo looks a lot like one that is on the Pixdaus site under "Photoshopped". I don't know anything about photography so I could be wrong. I like the picture no matter how it was composed.
