Obama Announces Six Recess Appointments

Obama Recess Appointments

JULIE PACE   12/29/10 06:50 PM ET   AP

HONOLULU — President Barack Obama bypassed the Senate Wednesday to make six recess appointments, including a deputy attorney general whose links to the insurance giant American International Group had stalled his confirmation.

Obama first nominated James Cole to the No. 2 Justice Department post in May. But Republican lawmakers blocked his confirmation in part because of questions about his role as an independent consultant for AIG before its near collapse and government bailout in 2008. Senate Republicans complained that confidentiality agreements prevented them from receiving answers about his work for the company.

Others, including Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, the top Republican on the judiciary committee, raised questions about statements Cole made suggesting he supported trying terror suspects in U.S. courts rather than military tribunals.

Cole is a close friend of Attorney General Eric Holder and a partner at a private Washington law firm. His appointment is one of six Obama announced from his vacation in Hawaii, including ambassadors to Turkey and Syria.

Both Republican and Democratic presidents have made recess appointments, which circumvents the Senate's authority to confirm nominees, when they could not overcome delays in the Senate. President George W. Bush made more than 170 such appointments in his two-term presidency. President Bill Clinton made nearly 140.

Obama has made 28 recess appointments this year. The White House said Bush had made 23 at this point in his presidency.

Obama has often warned that he is willing to turn to recess appointments to overcome Republican opposition. The White House said the appointees he named Wednesday had their nominations pending for an average of five months.

The recess appointments mean the six people can serve in their jobs through the end of 2011, when the Senate finishes its term. A recess appointment ends at the completion of the next Senate session or when a person is nominated and confirmed to the job, whichever comes first.

Others appointed Wednesday were: William Boarman, U.S. public printer; Matthew Bryza, ambassador to Azerbaijan; Norman Eisen, ambassador to the Czech Republic; Robert Ford, ambassador to Syria; and Francis Ricciardone, ambassador to Turkey.

Good for you President Obama. Push through all the qualified people which the Republican Senators have held up because they are trying to ruin your presidency by pointing out how government does not work. No please get your best PR people to explain this to the masses - they need to know how unpatriotic and selfish the Republicans have been.

Way to go, Mr. President. Rack 'em all up. The GOP isn't going to cooperate with you and so it's time to show them your power. GWB used his to start two unfunded nonsensical wars. You use yours to move the legitimate business of government forward.

It is about time that President Obama appointed these people.  Too bad he didn't do more of them. The GOPrs would deny a conffrmation if the person wore black socks on a blue day.  I suppose this will cause much twitching and cursing in the ranks and leadership of the Party of No Ideas.

I am somewhat taken aback.

How could that nasty Mr. Obama dare to tweak the noses of those nice GOP Congressional members who only have the best interests of the United States at heart?

The unmitigated gall. What temerity. I dare say.

Everyone knows its easy to get dragged in the mud by the day to day of Washington. Who won the media cycle, what do the polls say, etc. Certainly everyone has their specific disappointed and frustration with the President, but its difficult to argue he hasn't worked hard and gotten an immense amount of important things done.

This is a pretty cool video and breakdown of what President Obama has accomplished in just 2 years of his presidency.

A macro, birds eye view :

AIG, Goldman, etc = Obama's policy makers.
05:12 PM on 12/30/2010
The nominee James Cole was not a part of AIG.. he was merely an outside advisor from the Securities Exchange Commission to monitor accounting - driven investment practices there.

His work did not even come close to dealing with matters that specifically included the major issue that nearly led to the company’s demise, namely credit default swaps.

The GOP opposed him solely for his stance in wanting to try "Gitmo" prisoners in the US Court system, and not tribunals.

Does anyone honestly feel that the same republican party that not only allowed, but enabled entities like AIG are now suddenly stricken with "honesty" themselves ?

Please...

Republicans opposed Cole's appointment for several reasons, all ridiculous!!.
They opposed him not only for his role as an outside advisor to AIG, & his wanting to try the Gitmo prisoners in the U.S.Court system, but also, and probably MAINLY because, in 1997, he was chosen by both Democrats.
and Republicans as Special Council to investigate Newt Gingrich for House ethics violations....
Unfortunately, his becoming Number 2 at the Justice Department probably won't change DOJ's position on stalking that involves "multiple stalkers', (Organized or Gang stalking),... namely "if it aint 'one-on-one stalking, then it aint no crime".
Try explaining that to the victims of this type of stalking, which recently released DOJ/FOIA documents show to be in the hundreds of thousands.
As one of those victims myself, I would ask Mr.Cole to instruct the FBI to begin to investigate & prosecute the groups of "hired thugs" who participate in Organized stalking; something Attorney General Holder has not (so far) done!!!!
Organized stalking should be addressed for what it is, Organized Crime!!!

Really! Looks like Santa may have given him a bag of something besides coal!

AP is wrong. AIG wasn't the problem. Cole's nailing Newt Gingrich during an investigation he did which caused Newt to have to resign from the House & pay $300,000 in fines would be the Real Reason! Actually, he's an expert in white collar crime which sounds good right now!

Wonderful.

Obama appoints an AIG guy today, the same day as his car czar Rattner gets nailed.

Change.

You'll know Summers when you see him. He's the clean one.

Lets hope they are planting the seeds of their own destruction. 2 years of tin foil hat measuring and fighting over its shape and the country will do what Calif did. Sweep the gop out with the trash.
