Rihanna Not In Topshop Design Deal

Can't a girl get a meal with Topshop owner Sir Philip Green without fueling rumors of a design deal? Nope, not if you're Rihanna.

The songstress was spotted at a restaurant with Green and Simon Cowell, among others, in Barbados on Monday, which led several news outlets to speculate that a fashion collection was in the works. But WWD has set the record straight, explaining, "the dinner was 'purely social,' and that no fashion deal is in the works."

However a Topshop spokesman declined to give a comment to the fashion newspaper. Does that still mean there's hope? And would you wear Rihanna's duds, anyway?

I like some of her music and performances. Her style in the beginning was beautiful. All of the interesting dresses she wore long and short. Now her style is a bit edgy. I'm not sure which style is really hers. I'm sure that wardrobing consultants were very much involved in the beginning. I would expect that her home country could be an interesting influence on whatever style she creates. She's still young and the greed factor is omnipresent since everyone is working the branding thing. It truly pains me that this branding thing has diminished the true beauty and true talent of real designers. I see nothing really great about any of this branding. Just a marketing gimic to clean your wallet out. If you are lame enough to wear a gimic then you have a lot to learn about style and whether you have any or not.

I can't even begin to imagine what her "style" is. Every time I see her, she looks completely different from the last time I saw her. Demure ... crazy ... high-fashion ... biker chick ... disco queen. Everything from Paris to Soho to Compton. Is that a style?

I'm not her fan, but, judging from her record sales, she enjoys quite a market niche. Why not brand her label? It makes good business sense. Since she hails from Barbados, that country might also buy her product.

I know! They are hardly "designers." Not as if they sat there with a sketchbook and drew out patterns and ran to Mood to find just the perfect combed cotton stripe. They let another group design everything, then they look at the sweaters and point to the brown one and go "I like this one the best." Then they put their name on the brown sweater. Voila - a designer is born! The ability to choose between two choice makes them a designer! And, Rihanna has horrible taste in clothes, IMHO.

Rihanna needs to wait and develop her own style. She's still trying to figure out whether she is a good girl gone bad or a bad girl, period. But making more money than she'll ever need in this life is a powerful incentive to create ugly crap that people will buy regardless of quality.
