#1. Daley Won't Seek Reelection

For more than 21 years, Richard M. Daley has been the mayor of Chicago. Most of us thought he would be mayor for another four years--until a September announcement shocked the city (and nation.)

"I've done my all," Daley said. "I've done my best. Now, I'm ready with my family to begin the new phase of our lives."

His decision caused former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel to exit his Washington job--and come to Chicago for a drama-filled mayoral race.
