Sanitation Department To Pick Up Half Of Giant Garbage Mounds

It's been a rough week for city's sanitation department. During one of the worst blizzards in the city's history, 720 of the city's sanitation workers called in sick. What a terrible and unlikely coincidence!

With the slow response to clean up the streets, even snow ploughs were getting ironically stuck in the snow, and ambulances were unable to get to those who needed emergency treatment. And as of last night, the city was covered in garbage from before Christmas.

The city says it has resumed trash collection on Monday, sort of. "We will have 50 percent of normal collection trucks out," Keith W. Mellis, a department spokesman, told the Times. "We still have 50 percent of the trucks out for snow-clearing operations."

Sanitation workers seem to be out in full force, at least on some blocks. A Gothamist reader sent in this video of a dozen workers digging out one car in some passive-aggressive show of force:
