Urban Adventurer Explores The Secret Underbelly Of The City (VIDEO)

First Posted: 01/03/11 11:55 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:20 PM ET

Have you ever jumped onto subway tracks to explore its tunnels? Or climbed the lattice-work of the Williamsburg bridge to get a great view of the city? Steve Duncan has.

Videographer Andrew Wonder shot this incredible short documentary, Undercity, about Duncan, an urban historian and all-around adventurer. The two of them journey into the dark, hidden underbellies of the city (illegally) and climb its bridges to gain an amazing perspective of the city.

A few of their stops include the secret station at City Hall, New York's first sewer under Canal street, the 'mole men' living in the Atlantic tunnel, and the top of the Williamsburg Bridge.

It's a nerve-wracking, awe-inspiring little journey.

Can't support someone interfering with transit in this city....anything can happen to this high-pitched voice fool consequently delaying our commute.

How does this whole thing affect me? This shouldn't be allowed, I might be delayed. It's like those pesky car wrecks that also delay ME. :)

Car wrecks are accidents.
This guy will cause an accident. It's a shame you can't see the difference; there is no charm to his foolishness.

Just another attention-starved hipster. Not only doing what's been done before and acting as if he's pioneered it like all hipsters do, but in this case showing the entire digitally inter-connected world, including terrorists, how to access our tunnels and bridges. You stupid mother effer. I hope a 90mph Amtrak nails you so theres nothing left but a blood soaked plaid shirt and your nasally, lispy shriek echoing through the tunnel.

Um, lots of Urban Explorers out there and even several websites and forums dedicated to being an Urban Explorer.

Still cool though. Just not as rare as this article implies...

Me and my friends used to explore subway tunnels in the 80's.....it seems a lot cleaner and a whole lot less dangerous now that most of the bums are gone.

THIS. WAS. AWESOME. Great short film. Loved the sense of Intelligent adventure/risk. Illegal? Yes. Yet Done for the purpose of appreciated overlooked/forgotten beauty in the NYC concrete jungle.. Hope to see more.

After 911, when I was living in NYC, there was always this tiny fear of some terrorist exploding something underground or in the subway tunnels. This definitely doesn't help that fear go away.

the terrorists might be going....aha! that's how you get down there!

Nothing better than exploring! It's great to find new places or forgotten ones.

I recall the Eyewitness News making a similar story about these tunnels and their residents when I was living in New York during the Ed Koch mayoral days.

Will this expose prompt a CLEANUP? Or will State and City officials continue to look the other way?

WOW , this documentary was both spectacular and horrifying. The part when he was exploring NYC subways was scary. This was way better than any horror movie. These guys did a great job. Hope they do more documentary's like this in different cities.
