McClatchy:

WASHINGTON -- In what appears to be the first diplomatic casualty from the latest WikiLeaks revelations, the U.S. ambassador to Libya has returned to Washington and is likely to leave his post, U.S. officials said Tuesday.

Ambassador Gene Cretz, a veteran American diplomat, authored several secret cables to Washington that speculated on long-time Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's health, and described his personal proclivities, including his reliance on a "voluptuous" Ukrainian nurse.

All this makes our diplomats look like a lot of bored housewives gossiping over the back fence.

I think I'm beginning to understand:

A diplomat uses undiplomatic and unnecessary language in a "confidential" cable that might be taken the wrong way if it gets out. Whose fault is this?
Julian Assange, of course!

The State Department's confidential materials are not kept secure. Over 1 million people can access them.
Whose fault is this?
Julian Assange, of course!

The leak of this material was made by a US military source and was published by the New York Times, the Guardian and Der Spiegel. Whose fault is this?
Julian Assange, of course!

Yes, I am beginning to understand!

Exactly. State Department chooses to fire Ambassador Gene Cretz for noticing that Gaddafi's Ukranian nurse was voluptuous. Blames Wikileaks / Assange for firing Cretz.

Now I want to see this woman to judge her voluptuousness for myself.

Added to the extensive list of those who lost their lives because of Wik.....

What's that? You say there have been no deaths attributed to WikiLeaks?

That's not what the on air personality on FOX "News" says.

Hell, he has yet to even lose his job. He is likely to "leave" his job, not get fired. Funny how words work.

He deserved to be out of work as he doesn't even know how to write a report and stick to the subject. What does the nurse's looks have to do with his role over there.

The title of this article implies that there have been previous Wikileaks casualties. Does HP intend to back that up?

So let's think about this - the U.S. was torturing prisoners around that time on the orders of the VP but this guy loses his job over the use of the word "voluptouos"?

If ambassadors have pertinent information regarding leaders of other countries, then why can't they just fly back to the U.S. and give their reports directly and vocally to the parties who need the info?

Anyone who has been alive for the last 20 years should know that cables, emails and other forms of written communication can be compromised. Not rocket science to understand that, since many of our own government personnel have been brought down by indiscreet missals.

Are diplomatic bags now searched? If not, then that is a good way to get written info to the paries who need it without sending it out over the airwaves. Use some common sense - or is that something in short supply now?

It all reminds me of a quote my mother used to say, which caused me to go back and find the original context for that: http://www.worldburnsclub.com/poems/translations/552.htm
