Barbra Streisand: 'Gypsy' Star & Director?

Barbra Streisand

Barbra Streisand may be bringing her love of Broadway and Hollywood together in a big screen revival of 'Gypsy.'

According to the New York Post, Streisand is working to secure the film rights of the legendary Broadway show, written by Arthur Laurents and Stephen Sondheim. Streisand would star and direct the movie, the report states.

If she wants to make it happen, she needs to get the blessing of Laurents, who famously guards his work. That seems to not be much of a problem.

"Barbra and I have been getting along very well now for some time," Laurents told the Post on Tuesday. "We've talked about it a lot, and she knows what she's doing. She has my approval."

Another potential roadblock? She may not want to play the lead, vicious stage mother Mama Rose, with the nastiness required.

"Barbra and I have had long talks on this very subject," Laurents said. "She had a mother who she always thought was Mama Rose. I don't want to get into the details, but the point is she knows. She's got it in her. She's going to be much more than people expect."

'Gypsy,' first on Broadway in 1959, was revived in 2008, winning a Tony for its star, Patti LuPone. It was made into a less than successful film in 1962.

I think I have seen "Gypsy" on BROADWAY,IN PERSON over these past decades (BTW: top 5 musicals ever written for ME)....and have seen them with 4 different women ,from Angela Landsbury to Patti, horrible Bernadette Peters(sorry ,she WAS bad!)...and that Bette TV thing was a total MESS..first, you can almost never see her sing/do HER AMAZING SHOWS, ANYTHING,unless in person..believe ME..I have been to almost ALL of her concerts and a totally different persona emerges from that woman ,when she has an audience to sing to!!....BS doing "GYPSY" in whatever role?!?!...I have questions and many of them because when she takes on a project, it is VERY hard for her to NOT direct herself..see a couple of the movies SHE has directed herself acting...just does not WORK...if a different director,MAYBE she can do that role..but NOT "wearing" both "hats"... I ADORE seeing Streisand in another musical,do a film but give it to another director please! if you DECIDE to act in that movie..you CAN do it,you can direct, sing & act BUT not you ,in that same movie, NO matter who you are speaking to Barbra!!!..I have been a huge fan since the 60s.PLZ do not mess with "GYPSY".do it the RIGHT way or do not do it!I
Cheers..

The demographics of any audience for this project would run from mid forties up. Hollywood makes the big bucks catering to teens and young adults-90% of whom have no knowledge of-or affinity for-Streisand's work. But if she wants to do a musical, why not an original? She could play a grandmother and avoid any chance of ridicule for attempting to turn back the clock. And the last time she directed a musical (Yentl) it was a damned good job-even if I personally found some of the songs hard to take.

I think two time Oscar winner Barbra Streisand is one of the most talented woman in show business. A voice that is unparalleled. I wish she would consider working more as an actress in films. I'm sure she might if she were offered great scripts.

Yes!
O my g0d I'am going to explode!
I thought she was bored with being a superstar.
But she always wanted that d@m directors Oscar so I am not surprised.
Wait till Bet Milder hears this cr@p ,she played Gypsy rose in a movie.
Streisand's is paying Bet Milder back for stealing her hair and look from a Star is Born and using it in the Rose.

Now i just wait.

Bette Midler did NOT play Gypsy Rose in a movie. True, she acted in "The Rose," but it was loosely based on the life of Janis Joplin, not Gypsy Rose Lee. And the story stated Streisand would play Mama Rose, Gypsy's MOTHER. While there are some similarities between "A Star is Born," a remake of which Streisand starred in, and "The Rose," I think you are reading too much into this.

Bette Midler starred as Mama Rose in a 1993 TV movie of "Gypsy": http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107065/.

Bette did a TV version of Gypsy
06:45 PM on 01/07/2011
Eh, Midler was awful in that version anyway. Sucks, because, she *could* have been good in that role. She's definitely not even considered one of the 'great' Roses. I'd be more interested in hearing their opinions.
11:33 AM on 01/09/2011
I disagree. I thought Bette had the best combination of love for her children and addiction to theatre. In order to make the character lovable - and she has to be lovable for the audience to live through 6 songs and all but two scenes without her - and she has to show that she's devious, resourceful, and desperate. The book for her version was identical to the Broadway play script (which I prefer). The few clips I've seen of Patti's version made Rose out to be certifiable. Didn't like hers at all. Just a thought

Barbra has trouble leaving behind the Brooklyn and adapting the Washington State! Love Batbra but still have an opinion!
10:18 PM on 01/05/2011
It is worth noting that Sondheim wrote only the lyrics. Jules Stein wrote the music and Laurents wrote the book.
11:53 PM on 01/05/2011
I wondering about that... I didn't find the melodies Sondheimish. His songs are much more sophisticated. The lyrics on the other hand... vintage Sondheim.

"You can work out the sack-row, workin in the backrow. Bump your behind till your dead."
02:58 AM on 01/06/2011
Close, but:

"You can sacrifice your sacrow
Working in the back row
Bump in a dump till you're dead
But you gotta have a gimmick
If you wanna get ahead."
11:29 AM on 01/09/2011
Actually it's "your sac-ro" as in sacroilliac, part of the pelvic joint. Brilliant all the same.

Only if Barbra is willing to do the raw, brave, not pretty emotion that the part requires and has NEVER been given! The nasty pathos that was Rose Hovic!

you do know that its about gypsy and how this warped woman impacted HER life?
no one would have known about rose if it wasnt for famous ms lee making it public..
why should this movie be bleak ? its a story about survival ...
03:40 PM on 01/06/2011
"Gypsy" isn't about Gypsy Rose Lee at all. She's a supporting character. It's about Rose. And, if done right, this should be bleak, since Laurents always intended the story to feel that way. The ending of the 2008 Revival was very bleak indeed.
09:56 PM on 01/05/2011
It's odd. I like Barbra Streisand the person and think she is a beautiful woman. But I do not like her voice, nor do I care for her movie work. She could really make a mess of this in my opinion. I hope it doesn't happen.

a mess ? this is an incredibly intelligent creative woman with a entire successful creer behind her as singer , song writer , actress and director behind her who better than her to direct this .. a man? really ?

Ever see "A Star Is Born?" (remake) or Yentl (impersonation of Arnold Stang)? Both truly horrible movies which she starred in and directed. I think it is just a matter of taste. I hope to never see her do another remake that is as bad as A Star is Born. Isaac Bashevis Singer really disliked Yentl. I'll take his word for it.
02:24 AM on 01/06/2011
I did like Prince of Tides though which she directed and starred in. It wasn't a musical.

That logic would bar any Broadway revival of any musical or play, or the filming of any musical or play. Re-interpreting, re-imagining classic American musicals is a long, honored tradition. For some of us, it's always a grand treat to see what kind of life a new director and new cast can bring to a treasured classic musical -- and "Gypsy" is one of the all-time greatest.

This woman is LEGEND PERSONIFIED! Would love to see her play this role.
Apparently her and her husband are going to divorce in the future http://www.futurecelebritygossip.com/2010/12/barbara-streisand-james-brolin-divorce.html

I hope that prediction is wrong. I have believed them to have a strong marriage. I would be disappointed if they divorced.
