Hudson River Plane North Carolina

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - The US Airways jet that made a near-miraculous landing on the Hudson River in 2009 will finally reach its destination, but as a museum piece rather than in service.

The Charlotte Observer reported Wednesday that the Carolinas Aviation Museum has almost completed an agreement to buy the damaged plane from the insurance company that owns it.

The museum is in Charlotte, which was the destination of US Airways Flight 1549 until a flock of geese disabled the engines. Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger landed on the river off New York City and all 155 passengers and crew members were rescued.

Museum president Shawn Dorch would not disclose the cost of the plane.

The fuselage is in a New Jersey warehouse. Dorch says he hopes to have the plane on exhibit by May.

This plane does belong in a museum. It's the only successful water landing by a passenger aircraft in the history of avation.

An aviation museum is the perfect place. Displayed there young people will see it, hear the story of Capt. Sullenberger and it might inspire some of them to seek a career in aviation. At the very least it will remind people of the value of true professionalism and of a human interest story with a happy conclusion.

I suppose there is some historical value, but to actually see it in person:

Yep, it's a plane alright
