iPad 2 Case Shows Up At CES 2011--But Something's Different This Time

So far there has been no sign of the iPad 2 at CES 2011--but a case designed for the next generation Apple tablet seems to have been spotted.

Engadget reports having seen a case that's a bit different from all the rest, and which may hold clues regarding the future form of the iPad.

Engadget writes,

We've been seeing supposed iPad 2 cases for about a month now, all of them with the same telltale cutouts: a camera hole in the back, a camera hole in the front, and a big ol' speaker hole. Today's find beats them all, however: we just found a case with a machined aluminum iPad 2 mockup inside.

Dexim is the eager exhibitor, with an actually very intriguing case design involving a Bluetooth keyboard that magnetically adheres to the front cover of the book-like sleeve, allowing for a laptop-style setup, or a keyboard-free case when you want to shave a few ounces. It was so intriguing that we asked to put our own iPad inside, which is when we were told it wouldn't fit, since the case was designed for the next iPad. Indeed, the mockup that we found inside the case was a tad bit slimmer than the first-gen iPad, with a taper leading to the edges that reminds us of the iPod touch, and a home button positioned nearer the bottom edge. We found all the typical cutouts on the case, and their mirror on the machined mockup, including a large square for the speaker.

That was not the only iPad 2 representation at the CES, Gopod Mobile had a mock-up hooked to their battery dock, that may have been taken down after a talk from an Apple rep, the mock-up was marked 128 gb. The was also a clear plastic cover on display with camera and speaker cutouts similar to those previously described.

ok the keyboard is a NICE idea.....but im dying to know if that was a USB port I saw in the video from the other story in the upper right hand corner area. Thats mega for me!!! Gimme a USB port perty pls Steve...perty pls!!!

These iPad keyboard cases look slick, but what I'd like to see in photos or reviews is how well they work when set on a lap and typed on. The iPad can outweigh the base and keyboard, which means you have to put pressure on the keyboard to keep the iPad from flopping over. Technofail!

Do you really think that they wouldn't take that into consideration? All it takes is a minimal kickstand setup, just like in the hundreds of available cases that are on the market now.

I know this kind of stuff annoys people, like some of the posters here, but for those of us who want to buy a tablet we want to know what the iPad 2 is going to offer before we put down our money elsewhere. I'm not an Apple fanboy but I have to admit I'm waiting to see what the iPad 2 is about.
