Ed Schultz Calls Republicans 'Bastards,' Apologizes (VIDEO)

First Posted: 01/06/11 08:56 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:25 PM ET

Ed Schultz called Republicans "bastards" on his Wednesday show, before quickly apologizing--and referencing his boss's recent comments about him.

Schultz was talking about the newly Republican-controlled House of Representatives when he made the profane comment:

"This is an ideological war. I say it on camera tonight here on MSNBC. I will fight these bastards every night at 6 o'clock because I know what they're up against. I know what they want to do. They want to take down American workers. They want to outsource jobs. They want to destroy the American dream. Concentrate the wealth to the top, and control minorities. That's what they're about."

Schultz then interviewed Democratic Congressman Jim McDermott. At the conclusion of the interview, Schultz apologized. In his apology, he referenced MSNBC President Phil Griffin's recent comments that Schultz could sometimes go "over the top":

"I haven't had anybody in my earpiece since I started tonight, and management's not saying I'm over the top. I just referred to the Republicans as a term I probably shouldn't have used, but, I know what, they just infuriate me... So, if I offended some of you by that term I used a few moments ago, I apologize. Maybe I've had too much TV."

It's fun to watch the lib's play logic twister. Schultzy, no offense taken. If our jobs were as insecure as yours, we'd probably be just as hyper.

This guy is absolutely funny to say the least. I mean Ed is kind of that guy who sure loves being civil. But anyway I guess MSNBC needs people to fill up the void in their low ratings. Thanks Ed for the sound bites.

You go ED! The White House is not firing back and someone has to. Democrats have not learned their lesson about loud responses to lies and injustices. We need a media response leader like dare I say R_ve or a group ready to scream louder.
10:37 AM on 01/09/2011
Hey dragonlady, do you realize, in a small way, you are part of the problem? Anyone encouraging these talk show and radio show types to continue there rhetoric (calling for fights, it is a war, etc.) encourages listeners to violence. The poison is coming from both sides and you are a small part of the problem by saying..."You go Ed".

Flag down for "False Equivalency"! 1) Approximatly 92% of Talk Radio is owned or managed by Conservatives. 2) Liberal radio is reactionary in the sense that a large majority of the subject matter is a reaction to what's being said on the Conservative dial.

Discussion about politics is covered by the first amendment. There is NO COMPARISON. The violent rhetoric is a right based, PERIOD!

Ed Shultz has become a raging madman since the Republicans beat the Dems in the "shellacking' in Nov and it infuriates him that the Republicans have retaken the house. See my full story on ED here:

Great article but I don't think Comcast will be as forgiving to Special Ed's discretions. It'll be back to the Midwest  for Ed in 2011.

He was a raging madman way before Nov 2 and God willing, he'll continue to be. The outrageous Un-American activities perpetrated by Tea Party Republicans, demand an angry response from everyone who has access to a microphone.

IT'S AN EMPIRE, NOT A REPUBLIC!
09:13 PM on 01/07/2011
Ed,

Until you say on TV over and over that we are ruled by an Empire, rather than governed by a Republic, stop wasting my time with your Left vs. Right mental distraction.

You are a tool, just like O' Reilly.
10:44 AM on 01/09/2011
1776-- Couldn't agree more. My only adjustment to your thought is I wouldn't use O'Reilly as Ed's foil. Bill is 100% ego no doubt and has an off camera persona as a fighter. On camera, he is trying to stay above the fray and has been taking the other side against guests from the right like Dick Morris, etc. Disagreeing calmly with some righties has tempered Bill IMO. Hannity maybe the most lathered up one over there.

No one has the " lets step outside and settle this now" schtick of Ed though.

Anybody who hosts a prime-time show on a major cable network IS the power. Such a pretentious phrase.
10:50 AM on 01/09/2011
Ed owns truth? God help us.

Hey nighthawk1, what you should be saying in the aftermath of the tragedy to Eddie is to tune the rhetoric down. He seems ready to step outside and fight anyone who disagrees with him, clueless to the fact that more than half the country disagrees with his far left philosophy (republicans plus independents plus moderate dems) and an even larger majority would disagree with his battle/war/name calling style.

Is he that clueless that he insults all of us? I guess red meat to the 20% self described liberals (90% of the posters here) is enough to earn Ed his big paycheck. He knows how to butter his own bread but in doing so, needs to hear from the left to tone it down just as the other side needs to hear it from their listeners.

Come on, Ed's a cream puff compared Mark Levin, Savage, Alex Jones, Bachmann, Palin, Beck, et al. I'm sure the left will stand down, But the instigater of this tragedy is Conservative propaganda.
05:24 PM on 01/07/2011
Ed infuriates me.....but I can refrain from calling him any names. I used to watch his show, but not any more. I watch less and less of MSNBC, and dont feel like I have missed anything. I like to hear different opinions but can do without all the rants and name calling.

Yeah, he's a cranky one. I too prefer respectful discourse, not hour-long manure chucking sessions.

You don't learn much from them. These over-the-top hyper-partisan pundits tell you only half the story - that half which favors whatever side they're cheering for.

I watch all the news channels. Fox has the right to their point of view , the same as MSNBC, or CNN. I dont really care for either political parties rants. I just want truth from both sides, instead of name calling and nit picking.

Ed should apologize to all those people, who, through no fault of their own, were born out of wedlock and are labeled "b***t***s". How DARE he insult them by calling them all Republicans!

Meanwhile, on the right, some conservative is defending much more offensive comments by deriding his critics for their 'Political Correctness'.

Ed also said conservatives want to enslave minorities, well they will to steal the keys to the plantation from liberals because 40 years of failed liberal ideas has already done that. Bad schools, welfare providing more moeny for bad decision making like having more kids out of wedlock and now healthcare...liberal have convience a huge number of people that the government is there to solve all the problems they may have they just need more and more money from the private sector to do it!!!

40 years of failure (even if true) pale in comparison to the massive fail of Conservative Economic Ideology. Your people stole an election, took over the country, and ran it into the ground. Ed didn't go far enough, Cons' solution to the problem they created, is to eliminate the middle class, and force the poor, overtime, to live in peonage.

Really how many poor people have created a job, how many unions that Ed loves so much created a job. How may jobs have been created by the government other that government jobs to make it harder for people to start business and create real jobs!!!

Horse Feathers. If the private sector could provide a living wage, none of the 'failed ideas' you mention would be necessary. We have tried the charity approach before, it didn't fix the problem. We have never had 100% employment. No one has, ever. What do you suggest the unemployed do, turn to crime to survive? (get a job is not an acceptable answer because, as I said you CAN NOT employ everyone) The very fact that these 'ideas' you hate so much didn't work says far more about the problems than about the effectiveness of the solutions. Poverty can not be ended by charity. Homlessness can not be ended by charity. Good schools require more money, not less. The last 40 years conservatives have hamstrung every measure to assist the less fortunate, only to click there tongues in contempt while ignoring that they completely gutted any real chance at success.

Your 'solution' is that anyone who is not employable should die as soon as possible, so you don't have to pay as much in taxes. Woe to the ant on the leaf, proclaiming there is too much life among his hungry brethren in the dust.

Going 'over the top' responding to what's going on in our country today doesn't seem negative or bad to me at all. Rushbo and his ilk do it all the time.

What's happening to millions of americans, working-class, the backbone of this nation, is criminal. It's not going to improve with the new congress.

For anyone who loves this nation passionately, it's d*mn hard not getting riled up.

Leave Big Eddie alone, Mr. Griffin. He's doing a much-needed service for the future of our nation. Just leave him be.
