Gwyneth Paltrow Touts 21-Day 'Elimination' Cleanse

Gwyneth Goop

It's a new year, so time for Gwyneth to cleanse again. In her weekly GOOP newsletter, she touts the program of Dr. Junger, who has helped Giuliana Rancic lose weight with a 21-day cleanse. Gwyneth writes:

I have gooped about Dr Alejandro Junger's Clean program before because it gave me such spectacular results; it is really just the thing if you are in need of a good detox -wanting some mental clarity and to drop a few pounds. Especially for us, Dr. Junger has created some amazing bonus material, a treasure trove of recipes for a 21-Day Elimination Diet and a three-day cleanse for those of us who want to start with a mini (although I cannot recommend the 21-day version enough). Here's to a happy liver and an amazing 2011!

Love,

gp

Dr. Junger's advice follows. Of the 21-day detox program, which he notes does not require you to stay home within a stone's throw of the toilet, he writes:

If you are serious about turning around your health in 2011, this cleanse is for you. The cleanse focuses on changing habits and reseting the digestive track so foods that you find yourself craving begin to have very little appeal to you. The cleanse isn't hard, but it does take focus.

This cleanse can be ordered for $425.

Gwyneth also began 2010 with a cleanse - this one was a five-day juice fast. In January 2009 gave bowel movement advice as she embarked on an elimination diet.

I have serious problems with the things Gwyneth said in this issue that was posted here (and what she says in every other issue of her newsletter). My first problem is that this cleanse program by her “Cleanse Specialist” costs $425. That’s four-hundred and twenty-five dollars to partake in a fad that can be dangerously unhealthy if unsupervised and that leads to my second problem. You’re shamelessly promoting one of the most expensive cleanses. This costs so much money in a time when many are struggling to pay for food and rent (without even factoring in medical costs). Since most people probably either can't afford it or don't want to pay that much for this, they’ll probably resort to the Master Cleanse because you can find the ingredients for that one in amy cupboard. Unfortunately that one gives you about 600 calories a day. That’s a dangerously low level. This “Starve Yourself to Lose Weight” in a supposed “Post-Heroin Body” society is both backwards and disgusting. It’s insulting to anybody who has tried to lose weight without some short-cut and the fact that so many celebrities are saying it helps them lose weight is obviously dangerous since the weight loss will be temporary at best and I don't believe there's been enough research on what repeated cleansing does to your body in the long term.

The price I give you, but this is absolutely anything but dangerous. 600 calories a day for months and months on end is absolutely dangerous, but doing something like this for 3 weeks is not unhealthy in the slightest and actually has numerous benefits. Cleansing/fasting has been around for centuries and can be an excellent way to cut weight and, if done properly, keep it off permanently. Do some research on the benefits of cleansing first and then cast the judgment later on.

Maybe it's not dangerous, but it's unnecessary. Your body can already handle itself in this respect.

Is there a diet that I can go on that would cleanse Ms. Paltrow from the media?

Here's how to do a healthy and free cleanse:

Avoid processed foods and refined flour/sugars and drink 100 oz of water daily.

Another article about a celebrity taking a s**t. More than one s**t. Multiple greasy, exploding, horrible smelling s**ts.

I think the only thing this will cleanse you of is $425.

Exactly. Jeesh. People will do anything to avoid maintaining a sensible diet.

If you happen to ever see her in a movie, you must use an 'elimination' cleanse for your memory.
