Ms. Magazine Pelosi Cover Takes A Dig At Time And Newsweek (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 01/06/11 01:44 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:25 PM ET

Ms. magazine is hitting back at Time and Newsweek for putting John Boehner on their covers after he became the presumptive Speaker of the House in the wake of the 2010 midterm elections--and they're doing it by putting someone those magazines never featured on their covers during her four years as Speaker: Nancy Pelosi.

The cover line? "The Woman Time and Newsweek Won't Put On Their Covers."

PHOTO:

Pelosi herself mentioned this discrepancy to the New York Times' Deborah Solomon in a November interview conducted after the Democrats' midterm loss. Asked by Solomon how politics is harder for women, Pelosi said:

"When I became the speaker, we won 30 seats. It was a victorious thing -- I was the first woman speaker. It didn't get that much play. And I'm not a publicity seeker, so it was O.K. with me. Boehner, before the election, they had him on the cover of Newsweek. Now he's on the cover of Time, and women are coming to me and saying, 'Is the job less important when a woman holds it?'"

Time and Newsweek did indeed put Boehner on their covers (see below.) By contrast, after the 2006 midterms, Time put an analysis piece about centrism by Joe Klein on its cover. Newsweek put both President Bushes on its cover.

Ms. played on Pelosi's comments, even using the picture the Times took for her Solomon interview on its cover.

On the positive side, he looks just awful compared to Obama on the Newsweek cover and just plain creepy on the Time cover. (I also remembered to re-subscribe to Ms. )

No wonder Newsweek went under. Listen up, Time.

Nancy Pelosi's acomplishments will live on. Longer after both Newsweek and Time have bit the dust. I'd like an explanation from both these magazine.

Kudos to MS for calling out Time and Newsweek on this issue. Pelosi is awesome, and she was one of the strongest and most effective speakers in history.

Most women who have worked in the U.S. know about the issues Pelosi mentions.

It would've been nice if there was a disclaimer before I scrolled down to find a creepy a** picture on Time's cover.

The picture on Newsweek is colorized and the picture on Time is overly sharp and not flattering to him at all. No harm done....lmao. I notice they do this a lot. Andy, yes, it appears that when it is a woman, "it must not be that hard of a job afterall" Typical. I think Pelosi is awesome. I think Boehner drinks heavily.

She is a great Lady and American patriot. It is my opinion that whole world could sleep better when she was Madam speaker. I hope that time will come again and soon.

Really just what did she do for the "world"

Anyone up for spelunking in Boehner's face in the time cover?
01:58 PM on 01/07/2011
Seriously..Boehener and his crying game deserve a Time cover and not the first femals speaker of the house...sexism reigns in the good ole boy USA

Ugh, thanks for this one, Ms. Magazine, you are quite right. Time and Newsweek, as everyone with internet access knows by now, both suck a great deal. And do we really need to be able to count the various fissues in John Boehner's face? I could do without that image haunting my waking life...

You know, I've always said it's a shame how magazines airbrush every inch of a model's skin for the covers. Then I saw that Time cover of Boehner. I've changed my mind.

I wish they had used a more flattering pic of Pelosi. She's not great at faking a smile, but looks very nice when she smiles naturally.

First woman speaker- should have been on every cover. End of story.

That's a rather poor--and rude--opinion without any evidence to support it. Maybe you should think before you post.

Speaker Pelosi is exactly right. not only was she the first female Speaker but she achieved more than any other in the history of the position. no fanfare, no playing her up and she went about her work.

Boehner isn't going to get much done, working out ways to get taxpayers money into their accounts via privatization is not the recipe to get the country moving forward.
