Think crocheting a hat is hard? Then New York artist and crocheter-extraordinaire Olek will put your skills to further shame. Olek has recently crocheted cars, bikes, windows and even people. For her latest project she created a cover for Wall Street's monumental Charging Bull sculpture. Armed with needles, extra yarn and a crocheted ladder, Olek enclosed the bull in neon yarn on a cold New York night.
Why, you ask? Olek views the performance as act to honor the bull's sculptor and a "gift" to the city. In an email to Bowery Boogie, Olek explained,
I started it with a bike and ended up with the Charging Bull as a Christmas gift to NYC and a tribute to the sculptor of the bull, Arturo di Modica, who in another guerrilla act, placed the bull on Wall Street in Christmas of 1987 as a symbol of the "strength and power of the American people" following the 1987 Stock Market crash.
Although di Modica's clandestine installation of the 3.5 ton bronze bull was allowed to stick around, city officials tore off Olek's quirky cover-up within two hours. Since it's unlikely you were wandering Wall Street at 3 am on Christmas, you can check out Olek's creation in the video below.
