Reviewing Taco Bell's Beefy Crunch Burrito

Fork in the Road:

National fast-food chains continue innovating at breakneck speed, trying to keep pace with the competition and stabilize their market share - all the while being assaulted by new chains and much better stand-alones in key urban areas. Realizing that all their food is insipid and bland, in a country where consumers are increasingly craving hot peppers, and also realizing that their food is invariably so soft it could be eaten without aid of teeth, Taco Bell has decided to retro-engineer their newest product - the so-called "Beefy Crunch Burrito."

Sheesh how un innnovative a burrito with fritos corn chips. As if the tortilla is there already and it probably already has tons of sodium anyway. Whay don't they just wrap a salt lick in a flour tortilla.

When I read the article, I noticed the poster of the "Saucy, Melty Enchilada" in the photo. Why does their enchilada look almost *exactly* like the burrito? It sure doesn't look like any enchilada I've ever eaten or made.

And as for the burrito, I wouldn't bother with it.

Haven't eaten there in years, but I think that item is a burrito with some enchilada sauce inside. Not an enchilada at all.

I'd rather eat the wrapper.

I will never know what these taste like. After numerous times observing the kids who work at fast food restaurants return from the restroom without washing their hands, i refuse to eat there.

Amen! Food prepared by over-worked, under-paid, pissed-off teenagers is definitely not a recipe for a healthy meal. And seriously, the burrito is the easiest thing in the world to make at home.
1) nuke the tortilla (or heat on frying pan)
2) nuke the canned refried beans (or heat in frying pan): add some spices or hot sauce or a little juice from any pickled item in your fridge to make it more interesting. Put 2 Tbs. hot beans on tortilla.
3) add cheese, tomato slice, onion (grate cheese, chop onion and tomato ahead of time, and leave in fridge so it's ready when you are)
4) add hot sauce, roll and eat.

Cost? Depending on where you live: 2-3 bucks for a package of 50 tortillas; 1 buck for a can of beans; 3-5 dollars for a block of cheese that should last you weeks; 3 dollars for a week's worth of tomatoes; 2 dollars for a bag of onions; 2 dollars for a bottle of hot sauce that will last ...? Except for the beans, all of the food listed is enough to add to many more meals. And it's WAY cheaper if you learn how to make your own beans from scratch!

Making your own meals doesn't have to be expensive, difficult, or time consuming! One hour to buy a week's worth of groceries, and 15 minutes to make enough for you and four others to eat. Que bueno!
