House Suspends Vote On Health Care Repeal Due To Arizona Shooting

WASHINGTON — The House of Representatives is postponing a vote on repealing the recently enacted health care law because of the shooting spree in Tucson, Ariz. that killed a federal judge and wounded Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said all legislative action "is being postponed so that we can take whatever actions may be necessary in light of today's tragedy."

The House was scheduled to vote Wednesday on repealing the massive health care law. Republicans took control of the House last week after taking away 63 seats from Democrats in midterm elections in which the new law was a key issue.

Under the headline, "Construction Stops at Physician Hospitals," Politico reports that "Physician Hospitals of America says that construction had to stop at 45 hospitals nationwide or they would not be able to bill Medicare for treatments."
Kenneth Artz of the Heartland Institute explains, "Section 6001 of the health care law effectively bans new physician-owned hospitals (POHs) from starting up, and it keeps existing ones from expanding." Politico adds, "Friday [New Year's Eve] marked the last day physician-owned hospitals could get Medicare certification covering their new or expanded hospitals, one of the latest provisions of the reform law to go into effect."
This aspect of Obamacare is, by all accounts, a concession to the powerful American Hospital Association (AHA), a supporter of Obamacare, which prefers to have its member hospitals operate without competition from hospitals owned by doctors.

The main reason the Repubs postponed the votes was because they planned to use the phrase JOB KILLER as part of their opposition strategy and realized the timing is bad to be using the word killer.

This delay is a convenient excuse for many. In the meantime, hold your rep accountable and make them sign therepealpledge.com

this is an utter non-sequitur, it will not pass in the senate therefore the law is here to stay, furthermore, the people who now benefit from the new law are precisely the voters who in 2012 are going to see to it that the republican gains of 2010 are rolled back considerably, at that point, with a substantial house and senate majority and a re-elected president, the health care law will be revised to what voters have always wanted, which is single payer, it is what all civilised countries of this planet do, save America, then again, gun violence is not a given in civilised countries across the globe...

I wonder if any of the injured people don't have health care or would be helped by the health care bill? Somebody should check this out.

It is just a convenient excuse. The GOP would not repeal forced insurance. They want everyone to buy their own insurance for everything.

It would be nice if Repubs would suspend lying their collective A $$es off too.

Well, guess the paper shredders are working overtime. All the "not nice" speeches that were to be made may never be heard!... Now what do we do Cantor? Oh, let's just close house for a week and rethink this thing.

Interesting, isn't it -- every day and every minute regular citizens are killed and wounded. But, the minute one of the special politicians is hurt, Congress immediately stops and the Republican leaders say something must be done. The same Republicans who have been screaming and spreading the hate and lies, now think something needs to be done. Well, Representative Cantor what needed to be done was to have people be civil with each other before now. You all need to stand before the American public and apologize for your words and your actions; and promise that you will never again lower yourself to such behavior. We don't want excuses and justifications, we just want it to stop now and forever.

I am totally sickened by the several responses on this item that somehow connect conservatives and Republicans with the incident in Arizona yesterday.

Please, people did you attempt to use Oklahoma City or 9/11 for scoring political points?

Please desist and remember that all Americans abhor and condemn senseless violence.
