Rush Bails Water In Wake Of Arizona Shooting

Rush Limbaugh

WASHINGTON -- Rush Limbaugh lashed out Monday at critics who linked the Tucson shootings to the confrontational, gun-themed rhetoric of conservatives such as Sarah Palin and the Tea Party.

Limbaugh's talking points are a guide to the ways in which the political right -- from establishment Republicans in Washington to the Tea Party at the grassroots level -- will fight back against attempts to tie them to Jared Lee Loughner.

The political coverage of the Loughner story is "childish and immature," Limbaugh said, but apparently threatening enough for the top-rated talk show host to spend his entire show undermining it as best he could.

His very long list of points:

  • LOUGHNER IS A LONE NUT. Even "the Obama government" -- the FBI -- calls Loughner a "deranged, insular irrational kid" who acted alone, Limbaugh said. "The kid was evil. He was into the occult. He had an altar with a skull in his yard. Was God in his life? He was stalking the congresswoman."
  • HEAVY METAL. "The guy listened to heavy metal, and some of that anarchist stuff. We're dealing with an insane individual."
  • DIDN'T WATCH FOX. "There is no evidence that he listened to talk radio. There is no evidence he listened to Fox News. There is no evidence that he saw Sarah Palin's Facebook page. No evidence he saw her lame website with the crosshairs."
  • BLAME THE PARENTS. "Where are the parents? Are they derelicts? He was so devoted to marijuana he wanted to make it the new U.S. currency. Did anyone try to institutionalize him?"
  • SHERIFF COVERING HIS OWN BUTT. "This kid sounds like he was very well known as a dangerous element around town. If there is a file somewhere about this kid in the sheriff's office," said Rush, and the sheriff had failed to act, then he would be partly responsible for the tragedy in Arizona on Saturday. "If he was so concerned about the Tea Party, where was security for this congresswoman's event on Saturday?"
  • DUPNIK IS A DEMOCRAT. "This Sheriff, Clarence Dupnik, is an anti-conservative."
  • WHERE'S THE SAFETY NET? "Loughner is obviously deranged, so where's the left's safety net? Haven't we spent trillions of dollars to build a system to catch these disturbed people? Where is the evidence that their compassion works?"
  • THE OKLAHOMA CITY TEMPLATE. "Sad tragedies, where people die, are seen first as political opportunities by these people," Rush said. "The Republicans had nothing to do with the bombing at Oklahoma City, but it was seen as a political opportunity for Bill Clinton. This is now the same template."
  • CRIMINALIZING SPEECH. "They're shutting down any opposition and criminalizing it. They've had a plan filed away in a drawer to take away as many of our political freedoms as they can. The Democrats just lost an election, and now the only other thing they can try to do is silence the opposition."
  • HYPOCRITES ON VIOLENCE. It's not the right, Limbaugh said, but the left that glorifies criminal behavior and violent imagery. "'No, no,' they say, 'that's art!' Rap music? 'That's art!'"
  • DEMOCRATS ARE GHOULS. They privately are thankful for Tucson because "they think it advances their sick and perverted purposes." Mark Penn, who was Bill Clinton's polltaker, said -- before Tucson -- that "Obama needs his own Oklahoma City."
  • DEMOCRATS v. THE MAJORITY. By linking Loughner to the right, Limbaugh warned, Democrats are "taking aim at a majority of the people in the country. This is not 1988, or 1993, when the drive-by media had total control. I am not going to be silenced," he said, but now he has too many allies. "They're accusing a majority of Americans of being accomplices to murder."
  • A DIRECT DENIAL. "At no time has anybody ever called for violence," Limbaugh said. "We've never subtly promoted it." And, by the way, the Democrats' language is and was worse.

So Garth Brooks can sing a song about a trucker killing his wife and no one bitches about country music,...but...us metal folk are partly to blame for this dude's instability?. No matter what you listen to, you're accountable for your own actions. If it truly was music's fault then that's pretty sad this guy had not enough willpower to overcome a genre of music haha. It's all context,...oh yeah what about because earl had to die? na na na na naaaaaa na naaaa...if it's in a catchy country tune no one notices huh? Weak pathetic mainstream.

Ha ha Rush is really defensive. There is no evidence he didn't see any political news, either. How did he know who his representative was?

Even though there isn't a proven link between Palin's cross hairs and the shooter, we do know there is a connection between the vile hate filled rhetoric that spews from the right wing radicals such as Palin, Limbaugh, Beck, Savage, O'Reily, Hannity et al. Example: The man who shot and killed several people at the Unitarian Church in Knoxville,TN during a children's program a couple of years ago, he had hate filled, liberal bashing books by Bill O'reily, Sean Hannity, and Michael Savage in his car. It doesn't take a genius to see the connection.

"Was God in his life?"
God apparently is in Rush's life, and Beck's, OReilly's, and Palin's.
What does God mean to these folks?

Limbaugh is a Leviathan in the media. He is a Leviathan in politics.

It's funny to note that Rush has alienated half of the entire country. I'm a liberal and I vote for just as many non-democratic candidates as I do democratic. I vote for the person.

I guess I'm a Liberal/conservative.

I can't take Rush seriously because he insults me across the board based on my political affiliation, not on my intellectual musings. He promotes dissension among the Citizens of this country from one side of his mouth and denies it with the other side.

How anyone can claim him to be a hero in any sense is beyond my understanding.

Sounds like Rush is correct in his analysis.
01:25 PM on 01/17/2011
Does it really sound like that to you? His perspective seems to be that the kid is a lone nut, insane without any affiliation to anyone, but then again, he must be a democrat because Rush says so. Or it must be the heavy metal music. Or the pot. Or the rap music. Or the senate majority democrats. And we should have stopped him earlier because of what he had said. But why are the democrats against free speech? But I agree with Obama because he said the kid was a loner! But his parents are to blame! And I have never promoted violence!

Rush is neither correct, nor analytical. But for logic and reason, he would have a point. Sheesh. Every article written about this behemoth venomous thing begins the same way: "Rush Limbaugh lashes out..."

I'm quite interested just what Rush was implying when he said, "Did he (Loughner) have God in his life?"

Let's all have a discussion about what he's implying here -

Would Loughner being an Every-Sunday Christian have somehow guaranteed that he would not have been crazy, as we're told is the sole explanation for his act?

It's amazing that in a country where 90% believe in a god, whenever something goes wrong, it must always somehow be the fault of the other 10%.

As a member of the ten percent who's amazingly not yet a criminal, I have ended my silence on this speculation that belief or submission to a god alone is indicative of good citizenship.

By nature of the argument, as an atheist, I should have committed some horrific act by now. I've had 43 years.

Maybe if you really believe that, my friends ought to evaluate their relationship with a person who's obviously compelled to be the embodiment of evil.

And this, my friends, is why the religious and political rhetoric cannot be ignored.

I do not believe in gods. Who shall be the first to arrest me for the threat I surely pose to you?

Limbaugh is high again if he believes his own garbage. I'll suggest that he has to take drugs to live with himself. Helps numb his pain. He's been inflaming anti government sentiment forever. Beck, Palin are complicent too.

I can get behind your suggestion of the cause of his self-medication, but I highly doubt he believes his own garbage. This article belongs under the Entertainment category, not Media. It's time we start making a distinction between valid and credible news sources and 'infotainment'. The man puts on an act and makes bank doing it. That's all he needs to know and all he probably cares about. He probably thinks the Teabaggers are idiotic just as much as most left-leaning Americans do—the only distinction being that the Teabaggers are the ones who allow Rush to make bank by throwing their money at him. The man's egotistical and egoistical, but I doubt he's much more than that—in a very literal sense, I doubt there is much more to Rush Limbaugh as a person than self-involvement and greed.

Obviously talk shows are doing their best to influence people. Whether they influenced this whacko doesn't matter. They are trying their hardest. As soon as it appeared somebody acted in that direction they are quick to act innocent and cast blame elsewhere. What about the next unstable person looking for any little justification?

Rush would have spun the assassination of Abraham Lincoln as nothing political just an actor with a gun
10:30 AM on 01/17/2011
Lincoln was a republican so Rush would blame it on liberals.

But by today's standards Lincoln was a RINO, so he would probably said something to the effect of "good riddance".
