A Brief History Of Product Placement In Movies (VIDEO)

First Posted: 01/11/11 01:59 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:25 PM ET

Oliver Noble of Filmdrunk compiled this impressive mashup of all the most noticeable product placements in movies, and we are stunned at how many there really are.

Complete with detailed notes about the history of product placement, this informative mashup's hilarity comes from the fact that so many films think their copious amounts of advertisements go unnoticed.

Of course, there's always the "Wayne's World" approach, which at least makes light of the obviousness of the product placement, thus making it tolerable. (Via The Daily What)

What about all of Wayne's references to Schwing?

Makers of large extending cranes, among other things.

How could you leave out Cast Away? It was a huge ad for FedEx and Wilson.

The Sopranos featured a number of prominent product placements.

The Houseguest with Sinbad and Phil Hartman had some of the most obvious product placement I've ever seen, as did Zombieland, which was essentially one long ad for Twinkies.

you may have not noticed these ads, but your brain did.

Some of these I would disagree with on the grounds that they're either set decoration (like the Fatty Arbuckle one), existing location-shoot background (Times Square), or were required for a joke punchline (the Groucho Marx one and Bed Bath & Beyond for Click).  I've also seen far more blatant product placement on Chuck (with Subway) and Hawaii Five-O (with that new Microsoft phone and Longboard beer), with my favorite being a Zima sign on Babylon 5.

Hawaii Five-O is also big on Chevys, as was Transformers (both heavily featuring the new Camaro, which I want).

Plus Will Arnett was dropped as the voice of KITT 3000 in the new Knight Rider because the show used Ford cars, which created a conflict of interest with his existing business relationship with GM.
