Ed Schultz Responds To Joe Klein 'Stupid' Comments (VIDEO)

First Posted: 01/11/11 07:37 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:25 PM ET

Ed Schultz responded to Time columnist Joe Klein's calling his comments about the war in Afghanistan "stupid" "and unworthy."

Klein had made the comments on CNN on Sunday. He had gone on Schultz's show to talk about the war and been seemingly horrified when Schultz held up a piece of paper reading "Get Out Now." Speaking during his nightly "Psycho Talk" segment on Monday, Schultz cited a poll by that network that said that 63 percent of Americans agree with the position that Klein criticized.

"Most Americans, interesting enough, they have enough details about your reporting- they want to get out, too," he said.
"Does Joe Klein think that 63% of Americans are stupid?" He said he would not apologize for "wanting to pull the economic drain and end the bloodshed."

I agree that we must get out, but doing so is much more complicated than just packing up our stuff and saying good luck to them. We need to make sure that when we leave we do it in a way that ensures that the past 10 years have not been one complete was of time and US sacrifice. I'm going to have to disagree with you Ed.

What possible outcome could convince anyone that it WASN'T a complete waste of time, money and humanity?

"...We need to make sure that when we leave we do it in a way that ensures that the past 10 years have not been one complete was of time..."

The past 10 years HAVE been a complete waste of time AND innocent lives. That's the obscenity in this whole thing. Bush and Cheney did SUCH a disservice to this country by not making Afghanistan the PRIMARY focus of our armed retaliation, that it is exceedingly difficult to think of them as anything other than political predators.

I guess you were wrong because he is still on MSNBC. Yeah, do us all a favor and stick with FOX so that the rest of us that watch Ed don't have to worry about blowhards like you watching MSNB.

Joe Klein is an opportunist (Primary Colors, the book and movie), whose agenda differs from the people of the US. Of course he wants people in Iraq, Afghanistan and Iran executing Israel's agenda. As long as blood is shed by Christians, what the hell?

I find it very strange that Ed is bringing up names of people who had nothing to do with the massacre out in AZ while not even reporting the names of some of the victims. MSNBC seems to want to try to tie this to people who have nothing to do with it. I think Ed needs to look no further than his own network to bring in things that had nothing to do with the whole thing, there is more anger at that network than any other I know of and a sick agenda on top of it. Before pointing fingers at others just look at themselves. From 5pm to 8pm there is a total IQ of about 27. They still wonder why they are the lowest rated network or why some listen to conservative outlets, because MSNBC will say anything without facts to back their statements.

Why have you posted this here? It has nothing to do with the topic and belongs on another thread, not on this one.

I happen to agree that it would be a mistake to leave Afghanistan. Not because we can rid ourselves of Al Qaeda by being there. That was not our purpose for going there in the first place, we went there to get Bin Laden. But, the Bush Administration played patty-cake with that war as it made off with billions if not trillions from the Iraq war. A focused effort on Afghansitan could have resulted in a different and more positive outcome. Womens lives will be hell if the Taliban is allowed to take over again. We OWE the women and the country a chance to get it right. Allowing Bush to waste time there during his administration is no excuse for walking away now. Until the Obama Administration efforts no REAL effort had been made in Afghanistan...the Obama Administration needs to try and get it right.

Someone on Ed's show said that Joe Klein supported the Iraq war. I was not aware of that. Can someone provide some insight on this?

"Womens lives will be hell if the Taliban is allowed to take over again"? I doubt bombing their homes, killing/injuring their husbands and children, destroying what infrastructure there is, is particularly helpful. Let's be honest. We're not there to improve women's lives; we're there to guard oil pipelines and extract minerals. Ditto for Iraq next door and, eventually, Iran too.
Bottom line: if you don't approve of the Afghan social structure, too bad. It's THEIRS to change; not ours.

On political positions I agree with Ed but he is just obnoxious to listen to. He is part of the problem not part of the solution. I was watching him last night and his ranting on Palin was just too much, and mind you, I despise the woman. I switched my DVR and the last night's Daily Show. Painfully ironic that Comedy Central provides more thoughtful and intelligent analysis than does MSNBC.....by a long shot.

I would agree with you, except that MSNBC has Rachel Maddow. So there is a place at MSNBC for thoughtful and intelligent analysis. But Ed's certainly not it.
07:44 PM on 01/22/2011
Ed is grating, Morning Joe is nauseating and now the only bastion of intelligence will get herself in the "rifle scope" of the neocon owners of MSNBC. Watch out Rachel. Lord I hope somewhere soon some source will provide a place for some shelter against the slime pouring from faux and most of the rest of the msm.

Ed, why do you spend air time responding an amBUSH "Journalist" !

The only thing complicated about Afghanistan is who is going to control the pipeline from Central Asia to the Caspian Sea and then who is going to also control the Opium trade.

Joe Klein is nothing but a paid shill.

I watch Ed every so often. But he comes on at a time when I prefer to switch my channel to the local news to see what's going on here in town (5pm).

But from what I've seen I don't have anything against him. But it looks like it goes without saying that Ed is going to be against *any* war. So what did Klein think it was going to be like on Ed's show?

Could it be that Klein is out of touch enough to not know Ed is an anti-war liberal?

I don't know what that 'holding up a piece of paper' thing is about. Who knows? The whole thing is getting people talking about Ed and his show. So that part can't be all bad.

Had Joe Klein never seen the Ed Schultz show prior to appearing on it? What was he expecting, a Charlie Rose or Tavis Smiley type interview?

I like Ed but Klein is correct on this one.

There has never been, nor will there ever be such a thing as a moral war.  But there have been and will sometimes be necessary wars.

I think both Joe Klein and Ed Schultz look petty and simplistic is this little spat.  Joe could provide us with some facts about what makes Afghanistan "complicated," instead of implying Americans can't handle the truth, and Ed could be more circumspect before citing yet another poll with a flawed and simplistic question asking whether we favor or oppose the Afghanistan war.

At first, the question seemed unanswerable to me.  I want the war to end, and I don't want the end to be precipitous and cost even more lives lost and possibly arm terrorists with nuclear fissile materials from an unstable Pakistani government (parts of which are collaborating with Taliban).

After the Soviet Union left Afghanistan in the late 1980s, over 50,000 Pakistani civilians were killed in a power struggle that led to civil war and ended with Taliban rule.  We have a moral obligation to at least try to avoid that catastrophic consequence, and the Iraq withdrawal strategy appears to be working so far, having reduced both military and civilian death tolls by 90% in the past three years or so.  And the last 50,000 US troops remaining in Iraq are scheduled to come home by the end of this year, per our agreement with the Iraqi government.

Yes I support ending the war, but no it's not as simple as just packing up and coming home tomorrow.
