HuffPost Exclusive: Madonna Makes An Announcement About Her Charity

First Posted: 01/11/11 09:05 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:25 PM ET

Madonna isn't just a pop star -- she runs a massive charity, too. Her Raising Malawi has worked to help children orphaned from AIDS in the poverty-stricken country, and also runs a school for girls. Not only that, but she has two adopted children, David and Mercy James, from the country.

As she continues to work in the country, Madonna issued the following statement:

"I remain deeply committed and am more passionate than ever about helping the children of Malawi - especially the girls. In a country where only 33% of Malawian girls attend secondary school, I realize that the plans we had in place for the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls simply would not serve enough children. My original vision is now on a much bigger scale. I want to reach thousands not hundreds of girls. I want to do more and I want to do it better. While I am grateful to all the people who have given me guidance and support up until now, we are in the process of implementing several changes and additions to the management of Raising Malawi in both the US and Malawi. I am also working with Trevor Neilson and his team at Global Philanthropy Group to shift the strategies that we had in place so that we can accomplish our goals with more efficiency as we continue to consult with our government partners in Malawi. This is a larger challenge than I thought, but I welcome it. We are focused on an approach which builds schools within communities across the country. We are currently determining the size, location, staffing and curriculum of the schools. I will continue to monitor the process of reaching these goals here and through my ongoing visits to Malawi."

Neilson, whose company Global Philanthropy Group advises some of the world's leading philanthropists, was positive about the shift in strategy. "Raising Malawi's new community-based approach will provide the opportunity for many more girls to receive a quality education. We are focused on ensuring the most efficient implementation of this new strategy in collaboration with Raising Malawi's partners on the ground." Neilson also noted the many achievements of Raising Malawi including the construction of a model orphan care center in partnership with Malawi's largest community-based organization as well as assistance to thousands of HIV+ children and caregivers through life saving medical treatments and daily nutritious meals and nutrition supplements. Additional programming has also provided thousands of children and caregivers in the south of the country with access to clean water through the implementation of piped safe water and the construction of new boreholes.

The only big announcement from Mad-Donna that would warm the cockles of my heart would be one of her immediate retirement into a convent.

I applaud Madonna's efforts to build a school for girls
I was one of many Peace Corps Volunteers in Malawi and still work to send funds to Malawi for development projects. My last visit to Malawi was 2009. The people of Malawi are the most amazing people I have met in my travels throughout the world as a scientist and a teacher. They are a gentle people who have a tremendous appreciation for education.
Supporting schools for girls is a wonderful means of helping this country. It is heartbreaking to see the lack of progress for girls in Malawi. They just don't go to secondary school. There is a lack of self-confidence in girls in this country and a school for girls will provide an environment where they can develop the self confidence to become effective leaders in their community.
Thank you Madonna for giving your resources and love to Malawi.

At least she's doing something worthwhile with her fame and money. I just wish more effort would be made in the depressed areas in our own country!

"I just wish more effort would be made in the depressed areas in our own country!"

Here, here!

I am so sick of these self-indulgent so-called celebrities sinking their "Money For Nothing" into foreign interests when there are children dying on the streets of North America! Why not clean up their own back yard before even attempting to clean up another. After all, where did they "earn" the majority of their millions?

In this country all girls are given the opportunity to go to school and learn to read.

Thanks madonna for your work. You are doing more for Malawi schools than they do in Backwards Texas.

I love Madonna!

I am sorry to say that all this is a complete load of rubbish. Since Madonna turfed a load of people off their land and then came over for the groundbreaking ceremony nothing has been built. I drive past the site almost everyday and now even the signs that are required by law on a construction site have been taken down.

I have nothing against Madonna but she is blatantly giving a false impression here. The last thing Malawi needs is more false promises.

Ouch! Nothing like someone actually on the scene to inject some reality. Thanks Will.

I guess I have a suspicious nature but can we be sure he is actually from Malawi?
01:40 PM on 01/12/2011
This is untrue. There have even been reporters from the BBC to the sightings. This was for a very critical documentary about her charity work in Malawi, but even these critical journaists had to admit that the workprogress was astonishing, a huge difference from years earlier. Orphanages were actually clean, there were enough caregivers and helpful hands for the children, there were clean beds and sheets and children looked healthy.

There have been many 'different users" (ahem, or maybe just one, what's the difference?) here trying to portray Madonna as a phony, making account after account just to spread negative messages about her. (if you read some of the comments here you might quickly to this conclusion aswell) So I would take what "will in malawi", a new user here (interesting name btw) with not a grain of salt, but about a ton of it.

Why so much venom against someone trying to help the dispossessed?

Great question.

I don't have to believe your "-ism".

Countries in which girls are taught to read and write have a higher standard of living than those that do not. Guess which religious group does least for female education. http://www.riazhaq.com/2009/08/female-literacy-lags-far-behind-in.html

Kudos to Madonna, loved her too from the beginning and will always, until my last breathe. What an inspiration she and the Neilson Group are!!! "Sometimes it gets so hard to find someone to admire"!!! Madonna, I pray you reach your goal and for all the children of Malawi.
