iPhone May Cost Verizon $5 Billion In Subsidies In First Year

Verizon

Verizon's iPhone coup may come with a heavy price.

The giant wireless carrier could end paying up to $5 billion in subsidies for the phone, according to Business Week. Verizon's rumored announcement Tuesday that they will begin to carry the iPhone, thus far exclusive to rival AT&T, caps off months of frantic speculation from the anticipatory public, though details of the agreement are yet unknown.

Verizon currently holds the throne as the largest U.S. wireless carrier, though AT&T's deal with Apple up to this point has kept iPhone loyalists tied to their network. This announcement may cramp the second-place AT&T further while boosting Verizon's fortune.

One analyst predicted that Verizon would sell 13 million iPhones at a subsidy of $400 dollars apiece, which would amount to $5.2 billion, while a more conservative estimate placed that figure at closer to $3 billion. Offering subsidies on hardware--which is substantially more expensive than the prices on phones offered with plans--is a usual practice for cell phone companies. A new iPhone 4 purchased without plan--or subsidy--costs $599.

Another factor in predicted profits are the data plan options that will accompany the phone. Revenue accounts for much of the money phone companies make after they pay the subsidies on the hardware itself. With smartphones on the rise and voice revenue on the decline, data plans are one of the last potential spaces for profit growth. Verizon is expected to announce an unlimited data plan, a move that could put great stress both financially and technologically on the company and its network. AT&T stopped offering unlimited data last June.

Analysts predict that Verizon's announcement will seriously cut into AT&T's sales of its iPhone, forecasting they will sell about six million iPhones this year, which would be a drop of nine million from last year. Their subsidy on the iPhone will also drop from $400 from $350, as their exclusive deal comes to a close.

The rivalry between these two companies is nothing new. Back in 2009, Verizon ran a series of television ads slamming AT&T for poor network coverage, while mocking their "There's an app for that" ads with "There's a map for that" commercials that displayed contrasting maps of the two networks' coverage. AT&T filed suit, though they eventually dropped their case. AT&T has already claimed Verizon will experience network fatigue, though the company's recent launch of their 4G network could potentially help handle such issues.

I'm sure Verizon hopes it pays $20 billion in iPhone subsidies.
They make it all back and then some - considering the $2400 value of a 2 year contract.

Hollywood accounting. There is no way Verizon is paying $600 per phone, they're just using those numbers to justify overcharging their customers.

Apple should allow Sprint and Tmobile to carry it as well, verizon is as over priced as AT&T so it's not like you get a great choice of carrier here.

I heard that the Verizon exclusitivity will only last for 6 months. That puts it right at the time frame for the iPhone 5 or whatever they decide to call it. One thing though is that it will most likely still be a 3G phone because Sprint is using WiMax for their 4G network, and Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile all plan on using LTE.

You can already use an iphone on tmobile if it's jailbroken and you use a tmobile sim card.

Oh yea! What I dont get from this article is the great stress the Iphone will place on the network. We already have great android phones all over the place, millions of them and I can say that Im 1/3 the way through my month and I have used over 5g of data so far. This is average for me.

Time for AT&T to offer "hot spot" services as well. I am not going to buy another "gizmo" I have to pay for and carry with me to connect my ipad and my laptop.

They are going to loose many many customers if they don't change their attitude.

I've heard that this can be done if you "jailbreak" the phone (not that I'd recommend it). I agree, it would be very nice.

Plenty of androids out of the box can be tethered or operate as a hotspot out of the box. Nonetheless, unless the Iphone 4 has changed this from 3gs according to my friend who jailbroke his, you can only tether to a mac and the mac had to be one of the newer mac os's.

I have no idea why this is or was the case but thats what he said.

Prediction: The iPhone is a very demanding smart phone. It will bring the Verizon network to its knees.

Also, remember, Verizon is CDMA technology. It is not a global technology like AT&T (GSM) and you can't talk to your friend and look up movie times on Fandango at the same time, for example. No simultaneous voice and data.

Verizon is migrating to lte which the rest of the world is leaning toward in the next year or two. You are correct on CDMA, but in the next month or so plenty of androids will be introduced to Verizon with CDMA/LTE and LTE can be used for both talk and data.

As for demanding, Im 1/3 of the way through my month and have already gobbled up over 5g of data with little to no issues.

To each his own though, if your happy with your iphone and at&t so be it, happy for you man just understand that V is changing their network very quickly now and almost everywhere around me is now LTE available.

I'm just interested in a "vanilla " phone with a cheap calling plan. Does anyone specialize in that?

"Cost in subsidies" does not mean Verizon incurs a loss.  If they can keep the ratio of new customers over existing customers high for iPhone purchases, Verizon inks out a nice net profit.  They only lose when existing customers, on current data plans, simply renew their contracts and upgrade to an iPhone.

A bigger concern is what roadmap Verizon and Apple will put the iPhone on.  If AT&T users always get the newer model six months earlier than Verizon, that will temper AT&T users wanting to switch.  Especially given Verizons 3G network limitations.

Doesn't apple get paid no matter how much Verizon spends?
09:38 AM on 01/11/2011
They probably have an agreement that Verizon has to buy XX million iPhones in 2011, otherwise they have to pay a contractual penalty.
