The Miami Herald:

A fourth-grader brought a hand grenade that he had bought at an Army Navy surplus store to his Miramar school on Tuesday, resulting in an immediate evacuation for the 300-plus student body and a possible expulsion for the boy.

Noticing the grenade in her classroom, a teacher at Somerset East Preparatory Academy called Miramar police just before noon.

Just imagine...in twenty years or so kids will be bringing suitcase nukes to class for show and tell.

You heard it first here.

I wonder which did more harm to the children's sense of safety and well-being; the bringing of an inactive grenade to class or the overreaction by the "adults" in the situation?

Regardless though, what were the boy's parents thinking?

A year expulsion for a toy dart gun or water pistol? seriously have you confiscated the baseball bats as well? How about the baseballs?

How do we expect kids to learn judgement if their parents and the school board haven't mastered it.

I should have read the article. This is a non-issue. This speaks to a sad state of adults in education!

Hey , the constitution says nothing about age or type of arms, just the right to bear arms. Doesn't this kid have a constituonal right to carry any weapon he wants.

I am so glad there are others here that agree expulsion or suspension is too extreme. The kid didnt bring it in with the intention to hurt and THAT makes all the difference.

Had one of my friends brought this to school for show and tell, he'd have been the envy of the 4th grade for having it! Coolest show and tell ever!

Seriously?  Expelled?  I brought an inactive 20mm cartridge my parents bought me from an ANG show to school when I was a kid.

I wouldn't even know where to get a live grenade from.  Get a grip.

I guess we couldn't expect a teacher in America to ask Billy where he got it, and realize that the surplus store doesn't sell live grenades.

I think the teacher and school may both be stuck under "zero tolerance" laws.

Yep.

I worked in a school district that had a zero tolerance policy. A young lady who had been accepted to Harvard, Princeton, Yale, UC Berkeley, and Stanford. This young lady had not received one referral in her entire education in the district (k-12). Four months before graduation, she was eating a mango on campus and was using a paring knife to peel it. A trouble making student went to report the young lady and the school moved to expel her. Her expulsion would cancel her acceptance to the top universities in the land. The parents hired an attorney to sue the district and the district caved. They put the young lady on independent study which allowed her to graduate and still attend the college of her choice. Unfortunately, she missed out on all the senior social events and time with friends.

To this day, that has been the dumbest situation I have ever witnessed in education. They were going to throw this young lady's life into a downward spiral because of a policy that did not allow for interpretation.

If it was an 8th grader, sure expel them. A 4th grader? I think he's probably already learned his lesson in the first 10 minutes after the teacher found it. It was for show and tell. The kid's too young to fully understand why everyone would freak out. He just thought it was cool. I might have a stern talk with the parents about why they would have it, and why their son was able to get ahold of it though. I wasn't allowed to touch my dad's weapons or weapon accessories until I was 14 and in his company. He'd never have let me even hold a shotgun shell without him present until I was 16, or take one out shooting by myself until I was 18 (with several years of discussions about safety). If you're a gun enthusiast, then you know that the first priority of weapons and weapon accessories is that you respect their power at all times.

And today, class, Billy will tell us all about the intermediate range ballistic missile his dad brought home from where he works with the government! Some things should stay on the battlefield...

That school must be a real blast for the other kids.
