Teens Have Plastic Surgery To Avoid Bullying (VIDEO)

First Posted: 01/12/2011 3:48 pm Updated: 05/25/2011 6:25 pm

ABC News reports that more and more teens are getting plastic surgery, specifically in order to avoid bullying. About 90,000 teens underwent cosmetic surgery in 2007 -- not all cases were due to teasing -- and the most common procedures were nose jobs, breast reductions, breast augmentations, ear tucks and Botox.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck talked to several teenagers who have gone under the knife and an assortment of doctors and psychiatrists. Check out what they had to say.

Wow, that's something. When I was little I got teased for my speech, pale complexion, and smile, I didn't get any of that fixed and I don't want to. It makes us unique and it sickens me to see clones.

The problem with America in a nut shell , superficial trumps reality the concept of looks solving everything or judging by looks .
I found the best way of handling a bully (but beware of cop callers) is a total butt kicking everytime they get out if line .

Sad. Very Sad. The thing about bullying is that no amount of changing on the part of the victim will stop the bully. A spouse being abused finally discovering that there is nothing that they are doing to cause the abuse from the abuser and that problem is the abusive spouse. This is a point of growth that the teens going up under the knife instead miss out on. They literally give away a part of themselves up through some way of augmentation and call this "confidence" It is a shame that doctors are making money off of this and justifying it. A big nose is not a birth defect.

Lots of adults forget how painful adolescence can be, and lots of folks think that actually know something about the teens and the parents who decided that surgery was the best option (even though they know absolutely nothing about them).

Want to know where the bullying occurred? The girls emotionally bullied their irresolute parents into providing plastic surgery. The parents allowed what's most superficial in our culture to dominate their thinking/decision making and in so doing, abdicated their parental responsibility.

What was going on in the school was not bullying, but immature (albeit obnoxious) teasing done by confused kids who have also been culturally supported in admiring the superficial.

Time to step up and put the superficial back into its proper place in the scheme of things. School is not a fashion runway and should not be treated as such. Kids are in school in order to learn and perform to their best academic abilities.

This is why I love Adrien Brody. God bless his nose! It's so awesome to see a hot guy who's hot BECAUSE of his uniqueness!

Most of us go through awkward stages of development, from babies to kids, the pre teen years, and the phase between adolescence and adulthood. Unless a kid has a deformation, I think it's really extreme for them to modify themselves in this way before they're even done developing.

If you allow your teenagers to get plastic surgery to feel better about themselves or avoid being bullied, you're just teaching them that in order to liked themselves and be liked by others, they should not be themselves. That's a horrible way to start off life. I say teach them to "suck it up" and work on fostering their psychological strength so they'll be prepared to cope with bullying: let's face it, it's a fact of life to be dealt with way past high school.

Both young ladies looked pretty attractive to me before surgery. However to be reasonable we could eliminate any possible discomfort to everyone by having the doctor examine every baby at birth. If a baby is not absolutely perfect he/she would immediately go under the scapel.

apparently this is where this sad stuff is headed. I wonder who has the money to pay for this plastic surgery? Who is paying for it, the Parent? the insurance company?

Everyone has something distinct about them, and it doesn't mean it can go away with plastic surgery. I think it's horrible that people make fun of others because no one is perfect. I'm positive that there is something about that person that you could point out at them. I give dredit to the people who can walk away and act like it doesn't bother them. Sometimes people get really hurt because of what they hear from their peers in school. Half of the reason people have bad self esteem is because of everyone else. Some people need to start liking people for who they are.

Everyone has something distinct about them..You can't always fix it, even with plastic surgery. I think it's horrible that people make fun of others because no one is perfect, and I'm positive that there is something about that person that could be pointed out to them also. This is the reason people have horrible self esteem, all because of school. People need to learn to except people for who they are.

People should accept themselves for who they are...

Who are the parents that are allowing 15 year olds to have nose jobs and breast augmentations? This is the worst kind of abdication of responsibility.

How would you handle the bullying and a daughter smashing her face against a wall?

Well for one, myself and the father of the child will instill self esteem from birth, which should help the child develop a good self image...not only that, but that there are far better things in the world to worry about than outer beauty (even tho my kids will b beautiful...their beauty won't factor into self worth). To me, fixing a physical imperfection with plastic surgery is not solving the root issue, self acceptance...so the way I see it, there won't be issues if the child's self esteem is built up.
