Indonesia: Toy Salesman Raped 96 Kids, Say Police

JAKARTA, Indonesia — An Indonesian toy salesman has admitted to raping at least 96 boys, police said Thursday.

The 34-year-old man was arrested last week in the capital Jakarta after a complaint was filed by the parents of one of the alleged victims, said investigator Reynold Hutagalung.

The teenage boy said he was abducted by the salesman and held for 45 days, during which time he was repeatedly raped and forced to perform sexual acts on other men.

The toy salesman admitted to raping at least 96 boys between the ages of 13 and 17 over the last two years, many of them street children picked up at train stations, Hutagalung said.

"He kept a list and details about each of his victims," he said, "including the names of 16 of them."

Hutagalung says the accused, a father of four, said he was himself abused as a child.

He could face 15 years behind bars if found guilty.

Yeah, how about five years per child's life that he's destroyed? That would put him in jail for 480 years, and even then that's still too lenient.

I was about to complain about how appallingly short his sentence is for the severity of his crimes, but it seems like everyone else has already expressed that very same sentiment.

IMO, the abuse of one child should carry a life sentence. To me it is just as bad as murder, if not worse.

There is something wrong with this news, I have hard time believing it. Indonesia is a Muslim nation, and in Islam, as far as I know, such a crime has a death penalty on it for MANY reasons, including homosexuality. So again, I am not sure what's going on here.

I am part Indonesian and spent a lot of time there as a child and I unfortunately have to agree with most of the comments here. Sexual crimes against children are still not taken as seriously as they should and the topic is still taboo. I was molested as a child but I still haven't told any family members, only my BFF and husband. I know it's no use telling my family because they will never react the way I want them to so I will probably bring it to my grave. Sad tho coz the one who hurt me was a relative. I love Indonesia and it has a lot of potential but sadly, corruption is still rife, especially in the civil service and until that is resolved, they will never make any real progress.
