New Zodiac Sign Dates: Ophiuchus The 13th Sign?

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 01/13/11 01:01 PM ET   Updated: 11/29/11 06:18 PM ET

Your zodiac sign may not actually be your zodiac sign anymore. (UPDATE: Scroll down for Twitter reactions -- and to submit your own!)

Astronomer Parke Kunkle says that due to changes in the Earth's alignment the dates of many zodiac signs have changed, according to NBC. In addition, there may be a 13th Zodiac sign: Ophiuchus.

Kunkle says that as the Earth and Sun slowly move the signs gradually change, as expected.

The change didn't happen overnight either. The 12 signs were designated to different periods of the year almost 3,000 years ago, when astrology began, and since then the Earth's position in relation to the sun has changed.

While the sign many people were born under may now be different, it shouldn't affect horoscope readings, according to NBC.

UPDATE: The Associated Press reported Friday evening that Kunkle has since clarified his earlier statements, emphasizing "this is not new news," and "Astronomers have known about this since about 130 B.C."

ABC News reports popular astrologer Susan Miller called the claim of new Zodiac signs "ridiculous," adding "We've known about this for ages."

The confusion seems to be a result of Eastern vs. Western astrology. Most of us are familiar with tropical zodiac (Western), based on the seasons, which has not changed, though sidereal zodiac (Eastern), based on constellations, has different signs including a 13th. Is there a correct system? That's up for debate.

See if your Zodiac sign has changed below based on the new claim. (And find out if your friends' signs have changed here or under the dates below.)

The New Dates:

Capricorn: Jan. 20 - Feb. 16
Aquarius: Feb. 16 - March 11
Pisces: March 11- April 18
Aries: April 18 - May 13
Taurus: May 13 - June 21
Gemini: June 21 - July 20
Cancer: July 20 - Aug. 10
Leo: Aug. 10 - Sept. 16
Virgo: Sept. 16 - Oct. 30
Libra: Oct. 30 - Nov. 23
Scorpio: Nov. 23 - Nov. 29
Ophiuchus: Nov. 29 - Dec. 17
Sagittarius: Dec. 17 - Jan. 20

This zodiac thing is a damn lie! I bear all attributes of an Aquarius: spontaneous, neurotic, from outer space...(maybe this change is good)

So i'm now aparently a capricorn... Just looked to see what my personality should magically change to and im supposed to be a 'major finisher of projects' ????? are you kidding me, I can hardly finish tidying my room. And stick-to-it-ness, well where do I start tearing that down, I change my mind every six minutes. And im supposed to plan carfeully... i dont think so.

I liked being Aquarius and damn it I'm sticking to it, because i do not want to be apart of the capricorn club. These new signs are horrible

22 zodiacal constellations, 16 ascendants.

http://lulu.com/astrology

The Academic Zodiac stands for NASA-based astrology. Minute accuracy from Pasadena. The 13 info was probably for kindergarten? The professor probably works with children. The 16 zodiacal stations of the Sun do not define the zodiac, it would be too simplistic as well as terribly inaccurate.

The 16 ascendants have nothing to do with the (13) 15-16 Sun-signs, since the Sun does not rise at east. The ascendant set is in constant precession. Most of us will observe Venus rising in Pegasus, much as we had Venus in Hydra a while ago: these are some of the accurate positions of the planets to observe in a scientist.

With only six dates that apply, this makes Scorpios special - the most exclusive of all the signs.
I can't handle the changes now that I'm a Virgo/Leo..Guess I'll have to check both horoscopes.

this is not some type of a hoax. my astrology professor showed me the shifting constellations and zodiacs back in 2005.

What silliness. Why only one? Why not a few extra signs? Why not an entirely different zodiac with really cool symbols you can relate to now?

We are trying to understand our destiny, and we won't get it through a zodiac.

Simply break free, learn how to cope with your fears, some may be real, most are not and hold you in place, silly you.

One must never equate Sun signs with fixed star constellations.
Every few years we hear the same old news from critics of astrology, mostly astronomers and physicists who know nothing about astrology.

They argue that the signs of the zodiac used by astrologers do not correspond to the actual constellations of stars on the sky. They say that the real star constellations have been shifting relative to the astrological signs by nearly one month in the course of the last 2000 years. They explain this with the so-called precession of the equinoxes.

In addition, they claim that astrologers suppress a 13th constellation, the Serpent Bearer (Ophiuchus), despite the fact that the Sun passes each year through this constellation.

These statements are true in a certain sense. But they are based on naïve and incorrect assumptions about the essence and history of astrology, and therefore they miss the target. Those who argue against astrology that way may well understand a bit about astronomy. But they are incompetent regarding astrology and have not done their homework. They speak in the media about something they have never studied.

The twelveness of the signs of the zodiac derives (as I understand the history of astrology) from the number of lunar cycles (moon-ths, i.e. months) that make up a year. This number has not changed. The constellations themselves are just markers, and very gradually shift due to the precession of the equinoxes. The whole "this is the dawning of the age of Aquarius" bit from the musical "Hair" was a reference to the idea that the precession of the equinoxes brings about shift of alignment that astrologers mark as "Ages". This is not new news.

At least the new zodiac sign will be profitable to horoscope sites, tattoo parlors, and jewelry stores.
