Pima Community College's board of governors has ruled to establish a memorial scholarship fund to honor the lives of those murdered during the attack on Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, reports KGUN 9.

Alleged killer Jared Loughner briefly attended Pima before being dismissed for, among other things, calling the institution a "genocide school."

KGUN 9 reports that the scholarship will be offered to students who commit to careers in public service or community building.

The board members' announcement follows Education Secretary Arne Duncan's statement that institution officials behaved appropriately in their treatment of Loughner.

According to the PCC website, those who choose to donate to the fund can opt to honor a specific person.

No, what Pima CC needs to do is set up a decent mental health counseling center on their premises. They sent Jared away saying he should get some help. They ought to have stepped in and tried to give it to him (given that we have no comprehensive care as a society). If they're raising funds now, it ought to go to help students who start showing signs of mental illness and need help. That's a way to prevent future victims.
