Chris Hughes Engaged Sean Eldridge

Chris Hughes, co-founder of Facebook and founder of Jumo.com, is engaged to Sean Eldridge, political director for Freedom To Marry.

According to the New York Post, Eldridge shared the news during a Freedom To Marry reception held at the couple's SoHo apartment. In attendance were guests including Cory Booker, Ivanka Trump, and Eric Schneiderman.

The New York Post writes,

The two decided to make their longtime relationship legal on New Year's Eve. "We were in Thailand in a hotel room in the north. We were delayed after two days in the snowstorm and Chris got down on one knee and proposed. It was very traditional and very sweet," Eldridge told us. "We've been together for five years now."

They have yet to set a date, and Eldridge said they'll try to wait until gay marriage is legal in New York.

Eldridge told the Post the couple hopes to wed "as soon as possible," in "the next year or two for sure."

Hughes tweeted the news to his over 6,000 followers on Saturday morning.

"My partner Sean Eldridge and I got engaged a couple weeks ago! We're excited :) (apparently this is newsworthy http://bit.ly/gfCw5g )," he wrote, with a link to the New York Post's piece.

Why is this news? Facebook? Gay? Marriage? Famous guests? What? I don't know this guy, never heard of. Simply just PR stunt.

Because you haven't heard of someone, automatically makes them not newsworthy?

What a sweet story. Caught Chris' interview with Colbert. Stand up guy.

He turned away from Facebook to work on the Obama campaign and now a non-profit version of FB that links you to charities you can observe and support.

Compare that to Zuckerberg's PR dollars for New Jersey.
08:57 AM on 01/17/2011
You mean after Zuckerberg made him a very wealthy man.

Only liberals can find fault with someone giving away millions.

Ummm. He was a partner in the formation of Facebook. Mark Zuckerberg didn't just "give" him his $500 million net worth. He earned it the same way the rest of the team did.

Congratulations, we need more families that do not take marriage for granted like straights tend too.

Blanket statements and stereotypes about heterosexuals is no better than ones about homosexuals.

People that are only now getting married under marriage equality will likely not take their marriage for granted. Straights DO tend to take their marriage and the protections and benefits it bestows for common.

That is an inflammatory and prejudiced statement.  I am a straight person who works in civil rights...my friends and I don't take anything for granted....

Despite seeing the hit movie 'Social Network' I still haven't put together the fact that Facebook indeed had a co-founder. I surely didn't know he was gay but who cares about that these days? If a guy can help his friend become a young multi-billionaire, then what he does behind closed doors is pretty irrelevant-I just know that I need a friend like that who can tap into my billion dollar potential. Ha!

I am so tired of the "behind closed doors" mentality. Our fundamental rights are at issue. Rights that are afforded others because of an expression of love, not sex. This fascination with our sexual habits is completely offpoint.

Safety tip: when the minister asks "do you take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband," don't launch into a minute-long self-important monologue and then ask if you've answered his condescending question adequately.  Learned THAT one the hard way!

I thought going with a bigtime Hollywood writer like Aaron Sorkin would make our vows pop, but the only thing popping was Sorkin.  Definitely going with Nora Ephron next time.  Or maybe David Mamet.

Awesome! But interesting that the cofounder of Facebook decided share the new via a tweet vs. a Status Update.
