Madrid's Beach Garbage Hotel Constructed To Protest World's Dirty Oceans (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 01/20/11 08:35 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:25 PM ET

A brand new hotel has opened in Madrid's city center made entirely of waste, according to the Agence France Presse.

The walls of the Beach Garbage Hotel, the brainchild of German artist Ha Schult, is made of materials found in landfills, the beaches and even flea markets (see photos of old guitars, socks, even balloons below).

The five-room hotel, located in Plaza de Callao, was constructed to coincide with the annual International Tourism Fair held in Madrid.

"I created the Beach Garbage Hotel because the oceans of our planet are the biggest garbage dump," Schult told the Agence France Presse. Roughly 30-40% of the objects used for the hotel were found on the beaches of Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Spain (the dirtiest beaches were apparently in southern Italy).

Don't get too comfortable with the idea of a garbage hotel, though: The property closes on January 23rd.

Also, coincidentally in Madrid, sits Don Justo Martinez's cathedral, a 50-year old structure built entirely from local materials.

This is a good way to bring attention to an important issue, but this is NOT a new idea.

In fact, green architect Michael Reynolds builds fully functional "earth ships" which are homes made entirely of human waste.

Also, you don't even have a utility bill to pay. I would consider that just a small perk.

I am also surprised it isn't getting more attention than this story, which is nice, but doesn't actually solve anything.

Last time I saw something close to that it had Paris Hilton and her boyfriend in the pic. Come to think of it, that was more like plain old garbage IN a hotel room.

We have those, too. Just wait too late at night to find a place to stay and chances are that's all you will find. The first clue is the neon vacancy sign with a couple of letters missing and the room next door which changes tenants four or five times during your attempts to sleep for more than an hour at a time.

A Hotel made of what "we" throw away? What an incredible statement!
