Marilyn Monroe & Elizabeth Taylor Used To Shave Their Faces: Report

First Posted: 01/21/2011 11:07 am Updated: 05/25/2011 6:25 pm

Today in factoids: some of Hollywood's most famous faces used to shave. Female faces, we mean.

Style.com talked to aesthetician to the stars Kate Somerville who named names:

On good authority (that being Elizabeth Taylor's personal cosmetic dermatologist, whom Somerville used to assist), the greats (those being Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe) shaved their faces for completely bare skin and an added dose of exfoliation.

And for those of you who want to try this at home, Somerville also says that "it's a total myth" that hairs will grown in darker and thicker. The more you know!

What do you think?

Quick Poll

Would you shave your face? (Ladies only!)

YES! Anything to get better skin.

NO THANKS! I'm all set.

My eyebrows have become so thin from plucking and waxing over the years that they are almost bare from the center out. So, I would be careful doing anything as extreme as shaving your face.

I've been bleaching and or waxing my upper lip for years. Does this mean I'd be better of shaving it?

Yeah, you get a bit older, you find yourself trying to shave your ear.

That's the whole theory behind those 'strips'
You are not really pulling out little columns of oil, you are actually
'waxing' your face and pulling out the 'peach fuzz' and the oil attached to it.

Japanese women frequently shave their faces as to movie stars,
when your face is blown up to 40X its natural size, on screen, peach fuzz makes you look like Yosemity Sam.

Frankly, I was relieved to read this article and comments. Embarrassed by my facial hair (which is really not bad; I just don't like hair), I didn't realize it was such a common issue for women. Now I don't feel so bad. BTW, IMO Elizabeth Taylor was one of the most beautiful women in the world...hair or no.

This actually has a scientific basis. Using a razor to shave the face will increase collagen production and improve the texture of the skin. Lots of models know and do this 3 x /week. Japanese women have done this for many years (in specialty barbershops). I was told this by a woman who works for a plastic surgeon (she does it & looks great--beautiful skin--and was told she could do so by her boss to save $$$ on plastic surgery). No, hair won't grow back thicker--just what your aesthetician tells you to protect her job.

i've been shaving since i was 20 now 28...people always compliment how smooth and clear my face is. I rarely get breakouts or bumps. I start with dr. bronners almond oil soap to cleanse, then exfoliate a bit, then use gel based shave cream, shave, exfoliate rinse, moisturize w/ oil of olay hydrating lotion. I barely have to wear make up and i'm good to go!

As I mature, I'm blessed with an abundance of hair . . . in all the wrong places . . . on my chin, for instance. Like the one I had last week. The one that kept eluding me. Before bed time I'd get in there close enough to leave a mist on my magno-mirror, position my best tweezers, grab it and pull it. . .well, actually snap it. . .off. . . leaving an annoying stub of a bristle.

Then I would be back the next morning, breathing on the mirror, measuring the overnight growth, finding enough to grab and doing the whole ritual over again, losing yet another tug of war with my own face.

Then one night I had a twisted dream in which I finally pulled the little sucker out. I held it up to the light and was surprised to discover it had a huge see-through root about 1/2 inch long, shiny and slick and shaped like a corkscrew. It looked like a miniature transparent upside down Dairy Queen—without the cone—mounted on top of a stiff black wire.

There was something printed on the root. I could read it without glasses since eyes can see better in dreams. The message read, "Keep this in water for up to nine days and watch it grow!"

I wonder what Freud would say?

I love it when people can laugh! And yes, I now have a jar of Sally Hansen's facial wax in my cupboard and am feeling very much like my grandma.
