Facebook Inc. is contemplating the expansion of a data-center project in Prineville, Ore., that already covers an area equivalent to five football fields, underlining the social-networking service's need to accommodate a rapidly growing number of users.

Meanwhile, Facebook is seeking to build bonds with the surrounding community. It's an effort that's had the company throwing a barbecue for locals, providing free dental care for area children and donating uniforms for high school sports teams.

So they built a 200,000 square foot facility....and only hired 35 local people.  Which means the place is basically run from all the people in California.  Yeah, that's a great boon to the community, alright.   Sure, the local public still has no jobs, and their tax dollars had to subsidize the construction and maintenance of the facility, but at least they get free BBQ!

Sadly, the Oregon facebook center is powered by dirty coal. Please join me and Greenpeace in asking facebook to use local wind power to protect these very kids in the article. Thank you!

Interesting, I thought that companies wanted to keep their data centers locations discreet and anonymous. B of A has a data center in downtown LA but it's in a totally secured unmarked building, (only knew that because I worked for B of A temporarily a long time ago)
