Michelle Obama & Jill Biden Coordinate With Pearls On Monday (PHOTOS, POLL)

First Posted: 01/24/11 04:25 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:25 PM ET

First Lady Michelle Obama and Second Lady Jill Biden stepped out to the East Room on Monday for an event unveiling efforts to better coordinate and strengthen the Federal government’s support for military families.

And the pair did a little coordinating of their own -- blazers and pearls. Michelle opted for a gray suit, with a necklace secured with a safety pin (super punk rock!), while Jill mixed cream with metallics and long necklace strands.

Take a look and tell us what you think.

Quick Poll

Who wore pearls better?

Michelle!

Jill!

Both.

Not into either look, really...

Although I've participated before in these so-called "face-offs" with celebrities I will never pit these two against each other. They are wives of 2 of the most powerful men in the world and they represent the United States well. I'm a big fan of both but more than that i'm a supporter of military families thru vavious charities..this is great and can't wait to see what they're planning.

Both of these outfits are slammin'! Finding new and interesting ways to wear suits and separates and other "career wear" is the job of every woman and they did it well here. Thumbs up!

Oh I thought this article would have some information such as who made the pearls Mrs. O is wearing, are they real pearls, where can i buy them, etc? Instead I get nothing more than another unnecessary poll.

Never-mind the pearls, she looks great in her suit. Michelle has looked so great the last few shots I've seen of her...remembering: grey-blue-suit, grape colored suit and now this tweed...She has been looking fab. She may well be setting herself in history as the First Lady who wore fabulous suits. And the evening dress she wore at the dinner held for the Chinese last week...the COLOR was fabulous on her...

From my point of view
Mrs.Obama's pearls look costume.
Their luster is to shiny plastic.

They are most likely Swarovski crystal core pearls. They are beautiful and very affordable. Especially when you buy them in bulk and make your own jewelry (like me!) I LOVE the asymmetrical look.

Stop the madness. Barbara Bush proudly wore costume pearls.

What's going on with Michelle's lapel? Looks like the seam wasn't pressed out. Is that intenional on the designer's part?

i think it's kind of a double lapel. Nice idea for a lapel. I have a Paul Smith sports coat that has that.

Sewing is my hobby, and I have been learning to tailor my own jackets over the past two years. It appears that the designer was intentionally violating the technical rules of classic tailoring.

When you design a lapel, the layer that appears on top is deliberately cut 1/8" larger than the one on the bottom to compensate for what's known as the "turn of the cloth." Here it appears that the bottom layer was cut larger than the top and then left more or less unpressed, which is why you see an accordian type pleat in the central portion of the lapel.

Another violation of the rules is in the dart which starts at the hem and ends at the bust. These darts are usually sewn from the inside of the jacket and pressed down towards the center so they are invisible. Here, they appear on the outside and are left unpressed as a pleat.

There's also something unusual going on with the button. But unfortunately, the closeup photo is cropped just above the button, so I can't tell what was done. It may be that the button is sewn on the inside of the jacket, rather than the outside, but that is just a guess.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the "deconstructed" look on myself or anyone else. I've worked far too hard to eliminate unintentional errors from my tailored jackets to want to engineer a deliberate error into them.
