Royal Wedding Memorabilia Makers Don't Know Who Prince William And Kate Middleton Are (VIDEO)

First Posted: 01/24/11 09:44 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:25 PM ET

The BBC went inside China's ceramic factories to see how they're handling the royal souvenir orders. UK retailers asked one workshop for 100,000 plates and it can only produce half that number.

In an amusing, but telling moment, one of the women affixing Prince William and Kate Middleton's image to a plate remarks, "I heard its for the wedding of a prince and princess. I'm not sure which country they're from."

It strikes me that some things never change. Here we have the modern equivalent of a peasantry making commemorative souvenirs for the wedding of soon to be king and queen.

What exquisit craftsmanship, it will guarantee years of fond remembrance of this splendid day, what with this fine China displayed prominently on the mantlepiece. Oh, the family feuds when they fight over this heirloom in the generations to come...

I think the sadder commentary is that England used to have so many porcelain factories that could have made the plates. They still have the high-end ones, but I guess the retailers couldn't afford the labor cost and still make a profit.

If I were making these plates earning less than $2.00 a day (which is most likely the case), I think I'd have more important things to worry about than knowing who William and Kate are.

Yup and there's a lotta other stuff they make that they are probably clueless about, like christmas decorations, or workers at GM China know what Verano means or VW China knowing what Santana means.

They reported the workers make 10 GBP (about $20 USD) per day. There is no way these workers make anything close to that... I am betting more like $.20 per hour, maybe $3 a day at the most.

Understandable. China has the world's largest and non English speaking population. They go with their daily lives working for meager salaries to feed their families and cannot afford a newspaper nor get to read one.
