The Coolest Book Apps For Reading, Getting Free eBooks And Organizing A Digital Library (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 01/26/11 06:51 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:25 PM ET

Are book apps books, or something else? It's like being at the birth of a new form. We love books, but these apps are getting pretty cool.

Electronic devices continue to make it easier for readers in multiple ways. Some of the following book apps are actual interactive e-books, while others help readers to find books or organize the books they already have.

Any reader will need at least a few of these. It's certainly easier to carry an iPhone or iPad than lug "Shakespeare's Collected Works" around.

Did we leave something out? Let us know in the comments.

"Wuthering Heights" By Emily Bronte

While Victorian literature isn't, admittedly, for everyone, this app certainly makes it easier to read it. Beamitdown Software scrolls text similarly to a teleprompter, as opposed to using paging. You can choose the color of the page and text, as well as the font size. If "Wuthering Heights" isn't the book for you, you can choose from one of their many other options.

Does anyone know if you can copy and paste text from ebooks? (No, it's not plagiarism. When I read a physical book, I highlight a lot of passages. I would simply like to be able to "collect" these in a Word doc or some such.)

As a  general reading experience, I much prefer a physical book but copy/paste capability might actually convert me to ebooks....

Usually not.

With the Kindle, you can highlight text and it saves the highlighted passage to a separate text file you can then transfer to your computer.

Thanks. That's useful to know. That would probably do the trick for me.

What about Anthony E. Zuiker's digi-novel Level 26 app for the iPhone and iPod Touch? It combines the book and videos into one experience. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/level-26/id334599281?mt=8

He's also coming out with an iPad app for his second book Dark Prophecy. Seems pretty cool: http://www.level26.com/cat/news

Hopefully the Texas school board will not declare eBooks tools of the Devil and ban them in the Lone Star State along with uncensored thinking.

Calibre is a free download for keeping all your books organized. It is simple to use and is constantly being upgraded. It handles all the more common formats and provides a conversion tool.

I remember watch a interview of John Grisham on the Today show about a year or so ago. He spoke about how the traditional book stores will be a thing of the past and within the next 10 years, will no longer exist. He conceded that ebook will be the only way you're be able to read any literature from today and future authors.

I endorse the idea of having the ability to publish any writings in a ebook format. The days of dominance by Publishing companies are gone. Writers are taking the route of self-publishing and ebook is a wonderful way to allowing them to have more control in how they market themselves.

no mention of Android apps.

I use Kindle reader on my Samsung Galaxy S with 4 inch screen. Works great and fits in pocket.

Have 48GB space on my phone. Total books now about 500 and talks little space.

Lots of ebook collections on Bittorrent also.

Calibre is a great Ebook converter to and from different formats .

just pdf file is more then enough

PDF tends to have a fixed format, which means the text doesn't (re)flow nicely, and the fonts are more difficult to alter. Grab a copy of calibre, and convert to ePub, get a decent reader app and see if you still prefer PDF.

You remember when you bought something and that meant that you owned it until you chose to get rid of it. You don't have that "luxury" with Ebooks.
09:06 AM on 01/26/2011
Not so with all e-readers. While most of the major corporate ones are that way, a lot of others use epub files that are DRM free.
09:37 AM on 01/26/2011
"Major Corporate" e-readers can read drm free formats too. Just because you got a kindle doesn't mean you have to buy your books from amazon.
