In his State Of The Union speech Tuesday, President Obama touched on an issue that's been a top focus of his administration: improving health care. Here's what he said, and what it means for the medical industry and everyday Americans.

What Obama said: "What I'm not willing to do is go back to the days when insurance companies could deny someone coverage because of a preexisting condition."

What it means: The health care reform bill that passed in March 2010 stipulates that patients with preexisting conditions cannot be denied medical coverage. This protection went into effect immediately for children and will expand to all adults by 2014.

Is that enough? Send your thoughts on what Obama could do better to submissions@huffingtonpost.com.

Obama thinks it's so great, he's exempting all his buddies and political donors:

Yup,
The unions are getting a pass on this "great" program.

I am surprised that President Obama and the Democrats have not embraced the moniker ObamaCare. Obama should say how flattered he is to have a transformational and caring Law named after him given it is the collective work of a Democratic Congress and the American people. He should accept ObamaCare as an honour and hopefully a lasting legacy to his caring presidency. ObamaCare actually has a nice ring to it.

Still no story from HP about those poor and very sick people on Gov. Jan Brewer's self-created death row in AZ and the 280,000 sick, disabled, physically and mentally in AZ that are about to join them. Why isn't this story being screamed from the front pages, with the added twist that it's a Republican from ILL who's trying to save all these people?????!

Today’s news tells the average person that health insurance waivers are now up to 729, plus four states, plus four new SEIU waivers. Seems the “Affordable Care Act†will only be affordable for a select few. Once again the haves and have not’s. The very people who supported the Democrats and the president on passage of this bill are now opted-out!!

A label does not define if something is a bad idea or not. That is determined by its own merits. But the healthcare bill was fascist in nature because it was written by insurance companies and tells us to all buy insurance.

This HC law is not what I would have wanted - the public option or single payer - but it's a move in the right direction. I don't like the idea of a mandate without that public option to force prices down through competition. I'm afraid that will artificially inflate prices. Why we dance around the idea of a government program of health care and coverage is beyond me - this should not be a for-profit industry.

Solid overview of major points-- and too bad the President did not mention either integrative medicine and lifestyle management as a way to maintain health, or require the drug industry to either cap their prices, or live with competition from generics.

Nice move by the President, having made the insurance companies to cover people with pre-existing disorders, which is commonly not done. But these coverage should be done at a affordable rate with affordable premiums hope the affordable care act meets this demand.
