The Insider Machinery Is Complete

First Posted: 01/27/11 05:43 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:30 PM ET

WASHINGTON -- Among his other attributes, Jay Carney is a cool dancer. I know that because I saw him and his wife, Claire Shipman, getting down on the tented dance floor of a fancy Georgetown wedding years ago. Jay Carney, who went to Yale and was a foreign correspondent in Moscow, is -- besides being smart, savvy, loyal and well-connected with the right sort -- suave.

Why bring this up? Because by choosing him as his new press secretary, President Barack Obama has completed his swift and thorough transition from crusading outsider to shrewd insider as he prepares to deal with the wild folk of the Tea Party, Karl Rove and the Republican kneecappers, and an electorate still fearful that the world is spinning out of control.

Say this about Obama: He is adaptable, he is a survivor and he has a supreme desire to win.

He is setting up his reelection campaign back in Chicago, but that is an expensive piece of window dressing unlikely to convince people that he is somehow still, if he ever was, a guy from the heartland. David Axelrod and the gang will be back in the Windy City, but the operation will be run by a Chicagoan-cum-Washingtonian with national and even global ties -- Bill Daley -- and a cadre of the best and the brightest of the Clinton administration who came to the city to do good and stayed to do well.

Obama came to the White House in the manner of Jimmy Carter, with whom he was, early on, mistakenly compared. But while Carter never expanded his circle beyond the "Georgians," Obama has, with stunning swiftness, retooled his administration to play hardball in the D.C. League.

Gibbs was one of the first hires by the original proto-campaign, and was with the presidential entourage from the start. In the early days, he played Sancho Panza to Axelrod's Don Quixote. He was best at deflecting news, rather than creating it. The Obama story was so compelling that the main goal of his campaign in 2007 and '08 was to not screw it up.

Carney has proven that he can excel at that same cautious game, but he can play it at a deeper, more confident level, given his long history in the mainstream media (he was at Time for nearly 20 years, including three as D.C. Bureau Chief). He has handled Vice President Joe Biden's account well, prevented the gaffe-prone veep from gaffery. He also managed to help Biden get some good publicity, including a laudatory New York Times Magazine story that portrayed the vice president as a powerful, behind-the-scenes player.

Axelrod believes that a campaign is a "narrative." Carney, who wrote and reported plenty of cover stories for Time, knows all about the craft and the power of narratives -- and, presumably, will be more willing to spin them out in public than the cautious Gibbs seemed to be.

There are few better-connected couples in the Washington media and social scene than Carney and Shipman. Their children attend the Sidwell Friends School with the Obama girls. They are the kind of well-liked, Ivy-credentialed insiders who make the Tea Party boiling mad. But why should Obama care?

Gibbs, meanwhile, will go out on his own, where he can go on the soundbite attack, but do it from the aw-shucks stance of a guy who comes from the part of the country where people tend to cling to their guns and their religion.

Gibbs, the son of teachers at Auburn University, liked to celebrate Auburn football victories by wrapping White House trees in toilet paper. I could be wrong, but I don't think Jay has done or will do that for a victory over Harvard.

Does believing in a campaign of narrative relate to a campaign of propaganda. If not the narrative you speak of would be followed through with. Hope and Change. Where is it?

Do you ever get the feeling that if you were privy to all the she-she cocktail parties and upcoming events you could almost write these articles before you read them?

It's really not that complicated. Business is mostly run by Republicans and business interest control the levers of power in Washington. The real power is with business and the money they throw around. Obama is just being shaped by the power around him.

What we are seeing with the appointment of Mr Carney is just the open acknowledgement of the corrupt alliance between the main stream media and the Obama White House and reelection campaign. ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, NYT, LAT, Boston Globe, Newsweek, Time, etc etc etc, are all just part of the Obama team. The alliance has existed since the mainstream media decided to go with Obama over HIllary during the primaries, and has continued through the Obama presidency. Now the White House is openly strengthening the alliance so all are on board for Obama's reelection campaign. ABC clearly will have the opportunity to get Obama's daily talking points first, but with email their won't be much delay before the others have them and go forth to get Obama reelected. If you actually want to make an informed decision tune into Fox News once in awhile where you can hear both sides. Even if you are an Obama supporter you should turn in once in awhile. In a democracy you should at least be exposed to the facts, even if decide they mean you should support Obama!

"the operation will be run by a Chicagoan-cum-Washingtonian with national and even global ties -- Bill Daley -- and a cadre of the best and the brightest of the Clinton administration who came to the city to do good and stayed to do well."

They did well for themselves, but not for the citizens of the US with high unemployment, high taxes (and higher to come) and a huge tax burden for the young. The question is how much crap will hit the fan before the election (state bankruptcies, more unemployment, etc.).

Once again, Howie is caught kissing up to his DC buddies. He cites "a change that simply never happened; there was no point in time when the Obama administration was dominated by 'Georgians,'" as Matthew Yglesias notes. No one cares, Howie. You applaud his every SPEECH and press conference, but still all we get from this guy is REPUBLICAN POLICIES.

I am sure that having a better social network and being a good dancer will make all the difference in dealing within the Washington bureaucracy and network of special interest groups. It just seems to me that the focus of the progressives/Obama team is in the wrong place at this time in our history. It is all the "fluff" stuff and not on dealing with obvious problems like the financial mess they have exacerbated since coming into the Whitehouse. It is as though they are in denial of the reality of what is really happening.

The insider machinery is complete and so is Obama's defeat. Kaching, another lost vote from your base. Kaching Kaching. Thats right darlene, everytime you hear a kaching, Obama just lost another vote.

Here is a challenge for all "progressives":

Name a president since LBJ who was more liberal than Obama. Name the President and justify your choice by citing examples of specific actions of that President.

We will then compare those with the actions of this President.

Are you up to the challenge?

How about this: Richard Milhouse Nixon.

YES, Richard Nixon was to the left of where Obama actually is - not where he _says_ he is.

Obama's Afghanistan is Nixon's Vietnam.

Nixon championed the EPA - arguably more left than Obama's new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Nixon gave us the Clean Air Act, and the Clean Water act - either one is more left than the most left we've gotten so far from Obama - the Lilly Ledbetter act.

Nixon's Health Care Reform was very much like Obama's, but MORE LIBERAL - it had premium caps, expanded Medicare (or was it Medicade, I forget), and the rough equivalent of the Public Option. - He didnt' get it passed, but he had it on the table and if not side-lined by Watergate, he might have gotten it through.

These are just off the top of my head - tere are more good examples of how Obama is MORE RIGHT than Nixon, I'm sure others can chime in here.

OK, you've had this out there for over a half hour and more than 20 minutes with my reply. My guess is that you are stumped. You never expected a REPUBLICAN president to be LEFT of Obama, perhaps. Harumph. The truth is, Obama's to the RIGHT of a notable president of the Right.

Let's discard your absurd reference and equivalence of wars.

Now, tell me when Nixon's healthcare reform became law. How many benefited from it?
Having and idea or a suggestion is not an "act".
In contrast, we now have a law that would provide health insurance to 30 million plus Americans and no more pre-existing condition nonsense. Thise who cannot afford will get subsidies.

OK, fine. EPA was a liberal act. How about establishment of CFPA (now under Warren), reform of student loan program, signing into law equal pay for women, repeal of DADT, stricter emission standards, ..., all in two years, compared to about 6 years of Nixon.

Add to that the biggest initiative ever for green energy

Add to that the Stimulus bill (all to help the Middle Class) and saving an estimated 3 million automotive jobs by brilliantly saving and turning around GM and Chrysler without, as it now seems, spending any taxpayer money.

Compare Obama's transparency in government with that of Nixon (Ha!)

Do you wish to try again? This response of yours was too easy to debunk.
02:08 PM on 01/28/2011
I'll bite. Try Ronald Reagan on for size. He talked a good game and fooled the conservatives but really he was to the left of Obama at least so far...

Anecdotally though just off the top of my head Reagan effectively raised taxes and pulled out of Lebanon in the face of Islamic resistance to our occupation there. Obama has not raised a tax or pulled out of anywhere. Am I wrong? Prove it!

Here's a link to chew on before you go off 1/2 cocked and foam at the mouth...

Just saying a name is not enough. Please re-read my challenge and provide specific examples of liberal actions of Reagan, which can be compared with those of Obama.

I have never "foam at the mouth". I don't know why you said that. What I do expect is facts, not links to opinion pieces.

Are you up to it?
Provide examples of specific liberal acts of Reagan (facts). Let's then compare those with Obama's.

Overall, I am sort of disappointed in your response because it is so obviously absurd. But I am still willing to continue to respond to you, if you promise to deal in facts.

Reagan gave us catsup as a vegitable as counted by school lunch programs for Children.

Reagan closed many public libraries and told us to go to book stores.

Reagan saddled us with the absurd notion that "SUVs" are in fact pasenger cars - which resulted not only in much more unsafe highways but also rediculous MPG regulation - hence, MUCH more green-house gas emission, much more fuel consumption, etc.

Reagan terminated many green initiatives into solar, wind, and other alternative energies that Carter had gotten enacted. Reagan ended - before it could really begin, an initiative that all new federal construction include alternative energy and reduced consumption as requisite design criteria.

Reagan's staff kept the American hostiges captive in Iran by working a deal for weapons. They did this TWICE.

Reagan ran illegal wars in central America and funded them with illegal drug trade.

Reagan took a lot of money out of basic research that had been a driving force for American innovation.

Reagan took a lot of money out of education - as much as he possibly could - also a main-stay of "Middle America" (as he liked to call the middle class).

Reagan gutted regulation in every department and began in earnest the fa.sc.ist transformation of government outsourcing everything possible to business, at increased cost, but at increased profits to big business.

Reagan has no credible "left" credential that I can think of.

"Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" is NOT "left", it's center.

Howard Fineman should be banned from this site. President Obama may be typical self-serving political hack who is only concerned about his own re-election. But here's the difference. President Obama is being a self-serving political hack because it's best for the country.

This president cares so much about us, that he is willing to degrade himself into becoming another Chicago politician. Our president is willing to throw his values out-the-window in service to us. He's willing to give up on honor and integrity in order to help us. This president has become a weasel in order to save America.

Thank you Mr. President.

That's funny. All I know is what Obama hasn't done. They were the things he said he was going to do. The reason I voted for him. End the wars, close GITMO and side with the middle class on economic policies. Letting Bush and his cronies as well as the wall street thieves off Scott free was also a let down. Anyone willing to take a close look at any of those bills mentioned will realized there as about as watered down as you can get and still say you passed a bill. I don't have time here but I suggest you google the name of each bill and SCROLL DOWN to get to the truth behind the myth of some of these bills. I work for a company who has a full time IT employee who's sole job (rankings) is to keep what we want people to see come up as the first hits. Do your homework. Know the truth.

Very much a meat the new boss, same as the old boss situation. However, the fact that he changed from a losing position shows some pragmaticism which is a great quality.

I've said it under the previous Fineman's post, but it bears repeating:

Howard, you should get out more often. If and when you do, you may notice that the exhilarating game of politics, which thrills you so, means something completely different to the huge number of people who do not live and work in Washington, DC.

It is, to put it simply, a matter of life and death -- not metaphorical, mind you, as in political career death, etc., but the real physical and emotional fight for survival in the time of disappearing jobs, increasing health care costs, education prospects slipping beyond reach for most families, and such other unglamorous, non-Ivy League concerns.

Sposton, in his comment below, is absolutely right that our demise, when it comes, will be mightily aided by fake liberals, enamored with their own expertise and participation in the game of politics, but woefully disconnected from the real concerns of working people, who, after all, are the backbone of this (and any) country.

Shame.

====

Howard, you also say about Obama:

"He is adaptable, he is a survivor and he has a supreme desire to win."

You may or may not know that these are among the chief characteristic of sociopaths. Ivy League-educated, eloquent, adept at social networking (Ivy League!), skilled at knowing exactly what to say and do to achieve their goals, opportunistic, power-hungry and conscience-impaired sociopaths who comprise our ruling elite.

It is a cause for concern, at least.
