Michelle Obama's Obesity Fight Takes A Cue From The U.S. Army

FORT JACKSON, S.C. — First lady Michelle Obama said Thursday that the military's push to turn recruits into health-conscious warriors could be a model for making people across the U.S. more focused on fitness and nutrition.

Obama, who has made battling childhood obesity one of her signature causes as first lady, visited the Army's largest training post at Fort Jackson outside Columbia to see what the Army has done, from more rigorous training drills to fat-free milk in its mess halls.

She told Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling, who has worked to overhaul both the soldiers' diets and exercise programs, that she was fascinated by the project.

A lack of fitness is "not just a health issue but a national security issue," she said, and the military's health initiatives could be a model for youngsters elsewhere.

"A lot of young people around the country could use the same kind of support," she said.

Hertling gave the first lady a military-style briefing, accompanied by colorful slides beamed on three large screens hung on the walls, that detailed how the nation's obesity problems create problems for the Army.

Kids are spending too much time in front of TV and computer screens, not getting enough exercise and drinking too many sugary soft drinks, Hertling said. He said that makes their bones too fragile for military lifestyles.

New soldiers are given exercises for core body strength and stamina. Obama got to see the green salads, fruit and nuts offered in one of the chow lines at the post and chatted with drill sergeants about the challenges of getting recruits into shape.

The first lady sat with a half-dozen senior trainers, asking them how they dealt with a generation more adept at video games than sports or playground games.

"How are the soldiers reacting to this new training? I'm a mother, and it's all about getting the kids to go outside," she told Staff. Sgt. Brian Evans, of East St. Louis, Ill.

"It takes a while before they figure it out, that this food, this exercise, actually works," responded Evans, a 14-year Army veteran who said he'd been deployed seven times to Iraq and four to Afghanistan with Special Operations units. "Hopefully they will take that and adapt it to their lifestyle, so it branches off back to their families."

Obama echoed that message in her address later in the day to the 1,100 soldiers graduating after 10 weeks of basic training and recognized their effort to choose healthier foods.

"I know these past 10 weeks haven't been easy," she told the soldiers. "But the truth is, you never gave up, you never gave in, you pushed yourself to your limits and beyond."

To wild cheers, Obama praised the families attending for letting their young men and women serve their country despite the risks.

"We want you to know how proud we are of all that you have achieved. We are grateful to you all," she said.

Fort Jackson's commander, Maj. Gen. James Milano, said the first lady's visit was a big boost for military families, particularly those who have endured years of deployments and separations.

"It's a huge benefit for us, to have her come here and visit. This is a great day, a chance for her to come and talk directly to Army soldiers and their families," Milano said.

Also Thursday, Obama appeared on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" to urge Americans to support the struggles of U.S. military families. The first lady said she and Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, plan to launch a campaign in March to support military families.

Three days ago, President Barack Obama announced programs meant to support military families, including initiatives to prevent suicide and homelessness.

"There are things as a nation we can do big and small," the first lady said during her television appearance. "And it's not a difficult thing to do."

Fort Jackson trains more than 60,000 soldiers annually, including more than half the Army's female soldiers.

I know this is going to be a tough request but hear me out fellow Huffpost readers...First thing. How about instead of bashing each other over the head over every little disagreement or difference in opinion, we all acknowledge that the First Lady is pushing a very positive agenda and deserves credit for that. As a Soldier I will tell you that weight and obesity are issues of serious concern among both our Service and Family members and I am glad that Mrs. Obama is bringing positive attention to the subject. I have friends, family, and Soldiers, above and under me, that struggle with weight issues everyday and I know it is hard for them both publicly and privately. Mrs. Obama does not seem to be trying to shape policy, but that is just my opinion. If she is attempting to shape policy that strives to get our youth up and active then I fully support it. Let's be honest between each other folks. Just go out in your community and observe some of our children. We have always had big kids in thsi nation but it seems that they are getting bigger, younger and with the prevalence of video games and social networks, what motivation do they have to get out and be active? Just my opinion. Don't want to argue. We love our First Lady in the Army!!

I respect Michelle Obama for tackling an issue many of us don't want to discuss. She is looking at a multitude of ways to address the problem and the military program is just one of several.

That being said; some of my best memories as a youth were riding bikes, playing kick soccer and skateboarding outside. Healthy exercise just being a kid....

What is it with Michelle Obama? Wanting Americans to eat better is a good and noble goal but now she's interfering with the business that President Obama and Congress should be dealing with. She should not be sticking in her two cents into how our soldiers, those defending our country, conduct themselves.

Where was she when those videos about that commanding officer arose from the U.S.S. Enterprise that were sexually offensive to our fighting women?

She needs to remove herself from interfering with government business because we did not vote to elect her to the office of the President of the United States. Stick to promoting programs to get Americans to eat healthier, not interjecting her worthless opinion when our fighting men and women have more important things to worry about than their eating habits.

They need to make the fitness programs more tougher, to get the fat burning.

The battlers of the bulge can add a new weapon to their arsenal.

The Floss Diet: An oral restrictive device and behavior modification tool--made from floss. The inconspicuous floss device enables an individual to regulate food intake in ways that sheer willpower cannot. It reduces bite size capability and helps to control the impulses associated with mindless snacking, emotional eating, and binging.

The Floss Diet is for the rich and the poor, the young and not so young. It includes those without cooking skills, education, time, money and resources required by other diets. The book is filled with wisdom, humor and joyful artistry. An autobiographical experiment beyond vanity and political correctness: It may just be the “Susan Boyle” of the diet world. It is shockingly inspiring!

Ms. Obama looks great! We should all follow her diet advice. Some make fun because she outweighs Barack but I think she looks great!

Except Sarah Palin to Tweet a response where she argues that being fat is a right for every US soldier.

Knowing that First Ladies typically take on "motherhood and apple pie" issues, I am still disappointed that this particular First Lady did not take on the disgrace of maternal deaths in America. See: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jonathan-lewis/the-surprisingly-high-rate_b_812564.html. Here is a "motherhood" issue worthy of a crusading First Lady.

Michelle Obama's LetsMove.gov campaign to fight obesity is a nice collection of sad facts and old ideas. Many of the suggestions for reducing obesity have been around for a long time and others have been proven to not be very successful. What's worse is that even thought the received thousands of public comments, mine included. The report clearly does not listen to ordinary people who favor revolutionary ideas for successful change. http://www.bariatric-bypass-surgery.com/

Sorry, but not everybody can afford the price of bypass surgery (or any form of weight loss surgery for that matter), and not everybody's insurance will cover it.

my grandfather and his friends have taken to walking the nearby mall to watch all the people. they love to point out to each other those men/women who are so over weight they wouldn't survive the first two weeks of basic training. never mind the long marches with full gear.

Besides not freezing people's PAID BENEFITS, calling them ENTITLEMENTS, how about the fraud, abuse, unethical behavior, & kickbacks in Mediacal & Dental Universities? UMDNJ DEFRAUDED Medicare & Medicaid. NY Times, David Kocieniewski 11/24/2006.

Universities need to be monitored. SUNY destroys teeth, mutlates mouths, ruins lives like they're experimental rats. When you're no longer of any use to students, you're thrown out with no recourse. SUNY has been inept & abusive to me. SUNY should be accountable for what they destroyed and have to "fix" the damage, but they refuse. I'd Been a great patient for 25yrs.,loved them. In 1994 they lost my files and never heard of me. I needed a bonding & cleaning. Now I need bone grafts & a full set of teeth.

Medicare & Medicaid paid for that. I've been trying to get them investigate this scandal since 1994. Instead my mouth just got worst, I've had 26 shots & 28 shots another time even though I'd been traumatized by shots as a child.

I was arched up screaming, tears pouring.while they said "Shut up or we'll stop working on you. You're getting this for free!" They tore out permanent bridges & left me with holes. I had to stop work, eating healthy, socializing, go to therapy, even the ER after my appointment.

My hair turned white, stood up straight, & started falling out for 10 years. I just got it back after they threw me out. My life is ruined, this has happened to many other patients.

I am all about health. I have Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and have spent much of my time learning how food effects my every day feelings both physical and mental. I battle obesity because of the steroids I take when my MS is active, but when un-medicated by Big Pharma I stay at a pretty good weight. All this said I have a BIG problen with the line of thinking M. Obama is ushering in here. I already here you all yelling CONSPIRACY NUT thru the computer but I have no interest in being molded into one of the Obama's chosen people...

"Kids are spending too much time in front of TV and computer screens, not getting enough exercise and drinking too many sugary soft drinks, Hertling said. He said that makes their bones too fragile for military lifestyles."

Wow, that says it all, doesn't it. But it doesn't just affect these kids of this generation. Obesity is everywhere, and it is getting worse.

Go to any elementary school playground, you will see 1 in 5 or 6 girls is obese. And 1 in 8 or 10 boys. I went to the local beach and counted this summer. I was disturbed to realize the petite and overweight women in front of me were actually 7 year old children! Weighing 100+ at 4'6" as an adult is one thing, but as a child?

While we're looking at the military, let us also look at the policemen, firemen, and EMTs. So many are overweight, and it hurts everyone in the end. We need to take personal responsibility, instead of pointing the finger at the food manufacturers, who are in a for-profit business; or Mrs. Obama, like she shouldn't be concerned. We should all worry. Diabetes and heart-related illnesses loom in the future, in a country where we many cannot afford health insurance.
