Eli Manning On Jay Cutler Criticism: 'It's The Media's Job' To Tweet About Other Players

Eli Manning Jay Cutler

After several players and former players ripped Jay Cutler on twitter after he left the NFC Championship game in the third quarter, others have recently started to defend the Chicago Bears quarterback.

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning went on ESPN Radio New York with The Michael Kay Show on Friday and condemned Cutler's critics and criticized them for tweeting their comments.

"The whole tweet thing, that kinda bothered me more than what happened in the game with Jay Cutler," Manning said. "If you're at home, watching the game, and you're an NFL player, you shouldn't be allowed to tweet on anyone's performance."

He went on to say that it's the job of the media and fans to tweet about other players.

Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers also defended Cutler this week, calling the criticism "disrespectful." Charles Barkley said it was wrong to question Cutler's toughness.

After Green Bay won the NFC title, it was reported that Cutler suffered from a sprained MCL.

Sports Radio Interviews transcribed Manning's interview and you can listen to it here.

Look how McNabb has been laughed at and disrespect ed all year. HIs own coach Shanahan has questioned his heart publicly. Where was Eli on that? You are not supposed to criticize the golden boy quarterbac ks though.

Thank you Eli Manning. More evidence that this overblown nonsense will soon disappear.

Tweeting about a playoff QB is a great way to deflect attention from the fact that those players DIDN'T even make it into the playoffs.

There's been more whining about the Cutler critics than from the critics themselves.  Almost all from white athletes and white sports "journalists".

Yeah, white people sure suck. White people like Charles Barkley.

I'm sure Barkley is the authority on professional football.  BTW, I'm sure you would give Barkley's opinion a ton of weight in the event it disagreed with your point of view.

we all know why manning (of all people) came to Cutler's defense. Other players get criticism from their peers all the time. Look how McNabb has been laughed at and disrespected all year. HIs own coach Shanahan has questioned his heart publicly. Where was Eli on that? You are not supposed to criticize the golden boy quarterbacks though. look how they squeal when anyone dares criticize Brady or Peyton.

It's completely ridiculous.  The minute a black player has an injury or a bad game, everyone cries foul- coach included.  They question his toughness, his maturity, etc.  Everytime a white player goes through the same, people come out of the woodwork to defend him.  It's a joke.

Criticism/critique come with the territory and the multi-million dollar salary.

Intelligent athletes know when to ignore it {or} get motivated by it.

He's simply saying that criticism is fine but to get lip from your co-workers during the working season in a public forum shouldn't go down. Which does make sense.

Mcnabb gets criticized way more than Cutler nobody comes to his defense...this is the same way they criticized mcnabb in the superbowl when he could not bring philly back

Which active NFL Players were criticizing McNab during the Superbowl?
06:49 PM on 01/29/2011
Ok . What about Randy Moss-players criticized him-players that had to keep him in double coverage. And most people just nodded their heads. People get criticized all the time. I posted before that the whining over Cutler's supposedly quitting was dumb but this bandwagon jaunt is just the same. This is about keeping a story alive.
12:11 AM on 01/30/2011
The media never really criticizes Alex smith, bret favre, cutler the same way the rip into people like Mcnabb and young....so I dont mind players doing it...cos the media will never do it
02:02 AM on 01/30/2011
A lot of media types love Mcnabb and questioned why he wasn't more popular in Philly given his success there.

I don't think people are defending Cutler as much as they are against the specific type and source of the criticism. Everybody agrees he was awful in the game before getting injured, and nobody has defended his performance.

As a Caucasian (minority) player in the NFL, I think Cutler's critics should be investigated for their racist remarks.
12:02 PM on 01/29/2011
When Vince Young had problems....everybody criticized him this is despite the fact that he was rookie of the year and has a winning record. The guy is basically never given a chance and always criticized as soon as he has a bad game. However quarterbacks like Eli manning and Alex smith are allowe to suck but continue to grow.....I think that should also be investigated

The roll of quarterback is not a purely athletic one. It depends on leadership and the team's support of that leader. A team leader also has to get along with the coach.

Too bad that woman killed Steve McNair. He had talent and leadership capabilities.
12:21 AM on 01/30/2011
1. Eli Manning has won a Super Bowl.
2. Alex Smith will be a third string QB next season -- if he has a job at all.
3. VY brought a lot of criticism on himself for missing team meetings, sulking on the sidelines, and not working hard during the off-season.

Keep the tweets coming, players! They're a helluva lot more interesting than anything happening on the field in the nfl.
12:20 AM on 01/29/2011
The bottom line is Cutler looked mentally detached, and whether that was frustration, pain, or he didn't care, this is what happens. When Pouncey was carted off of the field in Pittsburgh, he came back with crutches and was standing on the sidelines, animated and cheering on his team. Personality plays a big factor, but there is a difference, and as the QB and leader of a team, whether he was in extreme pain or not, he didn't look like a leader, or even an active participant of the team. That could not be the case, but that's what it looked like.

But you know already, he's not a leader. He's just a dude with a big arm.

What you have posted has some merit, but bear in mind that he was not leading the people who tweeted. I have heard nobody on the team that he was leading, who was critical of him, and that included his coach. There are different kinds of Leadership, and all of them work in their own way.

No one complained about Cutler a week earlier when he tied Otto Graham's record for two TD passes and two TD rushes in a playoff game. No one complained after his FOUR TD day against the great Jets defense in a playoff-like game in week 16. No complaints when he threw 3 TD passes a week earlier against the Vikings. And, no one complained about his passion and emotion when he threw 4 TD passes against the perceived hottest team in football, the Eagles, in week 12.

Maybe players should tweet about the lousy offensive line Cutler played with all season long which led him to be sacked more than any other QB in football. I saw the great Peyton Manning play behind a struggling offensive line this year and he was flinching BEFORE anyone touched him.

The funny thing is the current players who tweet-bashed Jay Cutler, they themselves didn't make it all the way to the championship. I can understand former players, but current players?! So, I am glad that a lot of people are now defending him.

They didn't make it...and so? Football is a team sport. A lot of these players could have been out there playing with passion, leaving it all on the field all season, but for a variety of reasons, the rest of the team didn't come through. An offensive player can't control how well the defense is playing and vice versa. So it's perfectly acceptable for current players to question his mentality.

Is there a choice? Peyton has the most unpleasant facial expressions of anyone this side of Diick Cheney. Even when he completes a pass he looks like he's just swallowed a fish head.
