Bridging East And West To Combat Climate Change

Peggy Lui Gp

This week, we're profiling the Young Global Leaders attending the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland.

In the East, publications have dubbed her the "Green Goddess" and the "Green Miracle." In the West, she was named the TIME Magazine Environmental Hero of 2008.

As chairperson and co-founder of the nonprofit Joint US-China Collaboration on Clean Energy (JUCCCE), Peggy Liu hopes to turn China green in order to combat the effects of climate degradation around the world.

"As the mother of two young sons, I've committed 10 years of my life to work for free for JUCCCE to make a healthier world for our children," she said.

Currently, the US and China are the world's top two energy users and emissions producers. China's annual growth rate, and the expected movement of 350 million people into Chinese cities over the next 20 years, calls for a massive buildout of potentially green infrastructure in China. Despite the challenges that accompany this growth, Peggy sees it as an opportunity for the international community.

"The reason why Americans and Europeans should help actively collaborate with China to become green is not only because it's a huge market and they can make a lot of money there, but because a green China is the stepping stone to a healthy world," she said.

A 2007 Cornell University study reports that 40 percent of deaths worldwide are caused by pollution and China is currently the largest polluting country in the world.

Peggy admits she was overwhelmed when she co-founded JUCCCE in 2007, but as the organization has become a transformative player in the global energy space, she has clearly hit her stride.

"I think fate led me to this work," she said. "I had been doing a lot of work in different sectors and it all led to the ability to convene people who look at the issue of sustainability from very different perspectives. As a Chinese-American born and raised in the US but now living in Shanghai, it allows me to be a natural bridge for two countries that are actively trying to collaborate with each other."

JUCCCE bridges the gap between Chinese demands and American efforts by helping US-based research initiatives carry over into Chinese industry.

"Investing in US university research will create jobs for the US from the onset at the university level and also downstream when the research is getting commercialized," she explained.

Peggy claims not only will Chinese investment create American jobs but China will "get access to the innovative technology that comes out of the US. China is committed to going green but they don't have the technology and implementation capability. China was mainly a farming community not so long ago," she said.

Along with new research initiatives, JUCCCE is working to shape a "new Chinese dream," as Peggy calls it, "that decouples the rise in living standards with a rise in consumption."

Peggy has garnered international praise for her work thus far, and remains energized and committed to the work that lies ahead.

"These 10 years are the most important because the growth in China is happening now. If we don't act now, we're going to have missed the window to work together with China to create the foundation for a healthy world."

Urgent actions are required. All nations must emmit as much CO2 as possible to warm the planet. Prius owners must be severaly penalised for not sharing the burden.

Save pandas from heavy snow and extreme cold.

The worlds ever expanding population is coming head to head with the
worlds limited resources.

If those that believe PEAK OIL theory are correct increasing demand for oil
by China and India and their billion plus populations will soon exceed the worlds
supply increasing the price for all.

A shortage of jobs, food, water, phosphorous, tuna, and rare earth metals
have all been in the news. In the musical chairs of life someone will be left
standing without the resources they need to survive.

We need to move to a more sustainable economy with local production of
goods and energy.

Our economic security and national security will depend on it.

One disaster in the middle east and a large portion of the worlds energy supply
could be shut down.

Diversification of our energy supplies to local alternative energy would be a
prudent step to take.

Wind, solar, wave energy, geothermal and second generation biofuels are the future.

Individuals, business leaders and politicians all need to support the transition to
safe, clean alternative energy.

Bring on the electric, hybrid and flex-fuel vehicles.

Another 10 to 15 inches of Global Warming coming to the northeast this week.

Climate change isn't real, the only reason it gets hotter every so often is because sometimes Dick Cheney farts near an open flame.

So much effort wasted on a non-existent problem. Sad.

Less snow = Climate Change
More snow = Climate Change
Cold Temperatures = Climate Change
Warm Temperatures = Climate Change
Being Alive = Climate Change

This way you can never loose an argument.
06:57 PM on 01/28/2011
One way to win an arguement is to spell LOSE correctly.

Your climate science credentials are seriously damaged when you can't spell a 4 letter word.
11:19 AM on 01/29/2011
I guess if you're determined to avoid substance, you can spring on a mispelling, but what are your credentials? I have a medical doctorate, dropped out of my double (Ph.D) program and was an UG physics major.I wouldn't have an idea .It stuns and even more amuses me,when humanities majors, who can't convert C to F have strong views they parrot loudly.
Credentials?
Ans,for some specifics, when did Global Warming morph into Climate Change.
As the eminent B Bunny was wont to remark, "What a maroon."

I can tell these Global warming hoaxters didn't read REAL history at all or else they would know that centuries ago there was a real Global warming and then Little Ice Age that happened after, these before cars were invented and the world become industrialized.

Or maybe these global warming hoaxters are still in full denial about real history.

Actually I read history and, as opposed to some, science. The evidence of sudden climate change in the past does not negate the science for anthropogenic climate change . In fact studies of ice cores has proven climate has changed in the past.
Regarding your other comment regarding liberal indoctrination it is sad that faith in science is now divided between political ideology. It is very disturbing for the future of the country when you prescribe to a political belief you choose your version of scientific facts. I can't see much of a future for conservatives if they decide not to pay attention to the majority of scientists.

Your post demonstrates a complete lack of knowledge regarding climate change. Weather is what happens currently, climate change is what happen over decades and centuries. Global Warming would INCREASE the intensity of winter storms due to more moisture in the air as a result of higher temperatures.

I would tell him that this unusually cold winter was a function of the negative phase of the Arctic oscillation which has allowed cold air which is normally kept bottled up by the trade winds to spill into the eastern U. S., China, and a few other areas. What's the use, though?

I wonder what he thinks of the temps in the 120's in Australia recently, or the fact that an area larger than a lot of countries has recently been underwater there.
