The World's Top 5 Phone Makers Of 2010 Ranked By IDC

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 01/28/11 02:30 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:30 PM ET

International Data Corporation (IDC) has released its quarterly Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker report, which listed statistics for quarterly and annual growth in the mobile phone market.

According to the IDC's data, 2010 saw the mobile market grow 17 percent worldwide, its highest annual growth rate since 2006. These figures are even more impressive when compared with data from 2009, when the market shrank by 1.6 percent.

IDC analysts said that sales of both smartphones and feature phones were strong last year, and that smartphones will spur global market growth through 2014.

Though Motorola, Research In Motion, and Sony Ericsson were recently knocked off the list of the world's top five mobile vendors, IDC analyst Ramon Llamas said that these companies are poised to rebound in 2011. "Change-up among the number four and five vendors could be a regular occurrence this year," Llamas also said.

Can you guess which mobile vendors ranked among the world's top five in 2010? Check out the slideshow (below) for the answers. Which handset maker were you most surprised to see on the list?

Nokia is #1????

I've not seen a Nokia phone in eons.

And who the heck is "ZTE"?

This is WORLD wide, it's not confined to the (backwards) US market

I have a Samsung Moment. It's not the best smartphone out there; it's very average. It was one of the first Android phones, so it won't even get 2.2 on it. I've dropped it so many times, but I'll be damned, the thing is very sturdy :)

Apple is only a successful country in America because only in America are people willing to pay a premium for a product based on the "experience", which isn't even that great. iOS looks like it was designed by Fisher-Price

Nokia makes some sweet phones, especially that N8

I switched from iPhone 4, after it randomly died on me, to a Samsung Galaxy, and I can't believe the difference. Way faster, bigger screen, it's awesome! No converting media to iTunes exclusive formats, I love it.

Unfortunately it's a battery eater :(

i switched from Nokia n97 to Samsung Vibrant... i love it... use Advanced Task Killer from the market...set it to 'aggressive" and to kill whenever the display times out... that has stretched my battery to 10hrs now with talk time.

If you want to attack Apple, fine, but make a valid argument. HP policy: 'We do not tolerate ad hominem attacks of any kind.'

I've always had samsungs. My favorite phone. I can drop it a billion times and only minor scratches
I have an ipod touch too.. and if it was a phone, I'd hate it. It scratches so easily. >:[

As always, the Apple-haters leap at the chance to hurl insults. Sour grapes perhaps?

Sour grapes perhaps?.... yes... i cant believe that the media and apple's fanboys love to hype their inferior products so much, but whenever an apple user plays with my Vibrant they get jealous... why do we let the media get away with that??

Love Motorola products, always have been high quality as far back as the Startac and the Microtac and my father's first bag phone.

I can't wait to get my Atrix.

It upgrades by reminder, and just keeps getting better..

Primarily, Motorola is a communicat ions company.

I like Motorolas. Why? Because I can hear the person I'm speaking to. To me that's the #1 feature. A distant second consideration whether the other person can hear me.

Everything else is bs.

Primarily, Motorola is a communications company. To most of the other companies in this market, telephone communications is not their primary concern.

Nokia has the best sound quality of any phone, and across their entire range. Not sure I understand your point here
03:23 PM on 01/29/2011
There was a time when I had two phones. One was a Nokia, the other a Motorola. I couldn't hear anything well on the Nokia. I dumped it and got another Motorola. Maybe it was just my model.

This ranking is based on sales info, units sold, right?
Why are people commenting that they "think XYZ company should be there.."?
Sorry, I think the data just tells the ranking as it is.

FYI: Samsung is reported to be quadrupling Apple sheets for the Apple A series processor:

http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/01/28/samsung_to_quadruple_mobile_chip_production_for_apple_in_2011.html

More importantly: Samsung is building a Fab Plant for $3.6 Billion in Texas.

``Samsung was also said to be building a new $3.6 billion chip fabrication plant in Austin Texas, `in an apparent scheme to ship more of its mobile processors to Apple,' the report noted. The company currently builds APs like Apple's A4 in a factory near Seoul, in a an advanced 45nm facility capable of producing 40,000 sheets of the chips per month.''
