Michelle Obama Responds To McQueen Dress Saga: 'Women, Wear What You Love'

First Posted: 01/29/2011 5:07 pm Updated: 05/25/2011 6:30 pm

We're totally ready to turn the page on Michelle Obama McQueen Dressgate.

For those of you not caught up, here's the saga in a nutshell: the first lady wore British label Alexander McQueen to the State Dinner with China last week. Oscar de la Renta called her out for wearing a non-American designer and the CFDA released a statement expressing its disappointment in her choice. Meanwhile, Michelle donned all-American Rachel Roy to the State of the Union and we thought we'd gotten over all of the fashion drama. But then Cathy Horyn named Mrs. Obama the victim of a sartorial witch hunt and we just couldn't resist asking Joan Rivers what she thought of the whole thing.

And now, FLOTUS has spoken. In an interview with Robin Roberts of "Good Morning America" on Friday, the anchorwoman ventured to bring up the issue among important topics like Obama's reelection campaign, support for military families and Let's Move!

What was Michelle's response? She said, "Look, women, wear what you love. That's all I can say. That's my motto. I wear what I like because...I gotta be in the dress, so..."

Wise words. We think we'll get them printed that on a t-shirt. One made in the USA, of course.

Oh yes Michelle, wear what you like. If some designer wants you to put on her clothes then they just have to be pleasing to your taste.

Imagine the furor if the White House decided to drive foreign made cars. American designed and American made is American money that employs Americans. Just ask Detroit.

Michelle Obama is beautiful. She always looks fabulous! She wore a dress priced under 20 dollars at the View within the last 3 weeks! She's a lawyer, an activist, a fashion icon, a great mother, and she's intelligent! And she's a Black woman in America, which makes it all so much more impressive! Please give her and yourself a break, she is doing a wonderful job representing and helping this country!

She does represent the USA. Where do you think those clothes that ODLR and DVF design are actually MADE?

I hope Mr. De la Renta will begin to practice what he preach and hire some of the many African American, Asian and Latino models who remain unemployed because they are not hired to walk the runways in the clothes of American designers. How many jobs could he create in this country, if he used more American models without regard to race and ethnicity?

This is a non-issue...look at REAL issues in the world, not the label of a dress. Michelle Obama's state dinner dress controversy and what it means: http://web.me.com/rainesfordalexandra/Site/Welcome.html

So darn silly - what woman wants someone (anyone) telling her what to wear? I know I don't!! There are so many more important things in this effed up world to worry and be concerned about than what the First Lady is wearing today. Get a dang life.

Just as I would say. I wear what I like and what I believe gives me a sense of happiness when I wear it. Trends, status symbols, artistic egos be damned. If you make and I like it I will wear it. So there. Make something that I like!! Damn it!!!!

I distinctly remember when Oscar was complaing because she wore too much J. Crew and other ready wear labels. I also remembered when he complained about FLOTUS wearing too many "young designers" and "leaving us out" a chance. I know I'm not the only one who remembers this. Very similar to when CONs try to label her an "elitist" yet mock her for wearing "off the rack".

Their critiques aren't genuine and aren't worth the paper/bandwidth they occupy.
