Omar Suleiman Named Egypt Vice President As Protests Continue

Omar Suleiman

The Huffington Post/AP   First Posted: 01/29/11 12:12 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:30 PM ET

CAIRO — Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak named a vice president Saturday for the first time since coming to power nearly 30 years ago. It was a clear step toward setting up a successor in the midst of the biggest challenge ever to his rule from tens of thousands of anti-government protesters.

Mubarak named his intelligence chief of nearly two decades and close confidant Omar Suleiman, state television reported.

The president had been seen as grooming his son Gamal to succeed him, possibly even as soon as in presidential elections planned for later this year. However, there was significant public opposition to the hereditary succession.

The appointment of Suleiman, 74, answers one of the most intriguing and enduring political questions in Egypt: Who will succeed 82-year-old Mubarak?

Another question is whether his appointment will calm the chaotic streets of Egypt's cities. In the capital Cairo, looting was rampant on Saturday and lawlessness was spreading fast. Residents of affluent neighborhoods in the capital were even boarding up their houses against gangs of thugs roaming the streets with knives and sticks.

Ahram Online reports:

A spiritual leader of Somalia's Islamist Shebab rebels called for popular Egypt- and Tunisia-style revolts to topple the government.

Sheikh Jama Abdusalam said such uprisings would rid the war-wracked country of a government that he accused of serving Western interests.

"I am urging the people to carry out Egyptian- and Tunisian-style uprisings in Somalia," Abdusalam told Alfurqaan Radio, a Shebab mouthpiece.

Egypt's military rulers called for an end to strikes and protests Monday as thousands of state employees, from ambulance drivers to police and transport workers, demonstrated to demand better pay in a growing wave of labor unrest unleashed by the democracy uprising that ousted Hosni Mubarak's regime.

The statement by the ruling military council that took power from Mubarak appeared to be a final warning to protest organizers in labor and professional unions before the army intervenes and imposes an outright ban on gatherings, strikes and sit-ins.

Soldiers cleared out almost all the remaining demonstrators from Cairo's Tahrir Square, the giant traffic circle that was turned into a protest camp headquarters for the 18-day revolt. During more than two weeks of round-the-clock demonstrations at the square, protesters set up tents, brought in blankets, operated medical clinics and festooned the entire plaza with giant banners demanding removal of the regime.

A crowd of about 3,000 protesters, mainly lawyers and students, tried to march from Sanaa University to Al-Tahrir square in the city centre, where [Yemen President] Saleh's supporters have been camped since last week, but were prevented by security forces who erected barbed wire, witnesses reported.

In a move to manage the situation President Saleh halted constitutional procedures which may have allowed him to assume the presidency for life, and possibly pave the way for his son, the chief of the Republican Guard, to succeed him.

A message to the Huffington Post community

I am afraid I am guilty of some confusion and have dispensed some misinformation. On the 30th I posted a comment that referred to insider trading allegations involving the sale of BC-Rail. There are ongoing investigation related to the sale of BC-Rail but the insider trading was in fact related to Taseko Mines and applications they had pending, not BC-Rail and I had gotten confused by a story related to the BC-Rail investigations which preceded the Taseko story during a radio broadcast, I simply missed the transition from one story to the next and thought they were still talking about BC-Rail.

This is no excuse and I am shamed and deeply troubled by my lack of care in posting the misinformation. That my error did not really change the point I was making is also not mitigating the seriousness of my mistake. To any who read that comment, to the community at large ,I am truly sorryand I offer my sincere apologies. I am determined to not repeat this kind of error if I continue to post and I ask for your forgiveness for my heinous mistake

If Omar is a person from intelligence organization he had better resign to save his service at this time and keep it for future, national use now it is fatal Mubarek made him Vice president for his safety. His love for Israel will stand as an obstruction for running the transitional government as the US is planning. to repose the responsibility on him after rescuing Mubarak.

Is this what US should do? What about the announcement that the people to do what they would like to do. Omar would surely do what US will say then what is the use of the Egypt public endeavor for democracy. Is it not putting Egypt to carry out the interest of Israeli and facilitate Israel to commit Genocide on Palestine as Mubarek facilitated Israel to commit genocide in Gaza?

It suggested that US refrain from doing so for its own future good. to leave the matters to the Egypt public to do their own thing themselves would be more beneficial for USA and Europeans latter on

Omar Suleiman and the Rendition to Torture

By STEPHEN SOLDZ

In response to the mass protests of recent days, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has appointed his first Vice President in his over 30 years rule, intelligence chief Omar Suleiman. When Suleiman was first announced, Aljazeera commentators were describing him as a "distinguished" and "respected " man. It turns out, however, that he is distinguished for, among other things, his central role in Egyptian torture and in the US rendition to torture program. Further, he is "respected" by US officials for his cooperation with their torture plans, among other initiatives.

(snip)

Jane Mayer, in The Dark Side, pointed to Suleiman's role in the rendition program:

Each rendition was authorized at the very top levels of both governments....The long-serving chief of the Egyptian central intelligence agency, Omar Suleiman, negotiated directly with top Agency officials. [wouldn't "torture" the prisoner delivered for torture] the CIA dealt principally in Egypt through Omar Suleiman, the chief of the Egyptian general intelligence service (EGIS) since 1993. It was he who arranged the meetings with the Egyptian interior ministry.... Suleiman, who understood English well, was an urbane and sophisticated man. Others told me that for years Suleiman was America's chief interlocutor with the Egyptian regime -- the main channel to President Hosni Mubarak himself, even on matters far removed from intelligence and security.

The president made Omar a last minute nomination of vice president in fact trying to make him the sacrificing goat. Making the same sacrificing goat in case of the Prime Minister by nominating at this hour of his departure.. He knew no one who worked with him (Mubarek) would be acceptable to the protesters least of all the people who were helpers of the genocide criminals of Israel. Finding Friend in Muslim world for the uncouth Israeli nation would be indeed very difficult.

It is not the democratizing of the Muslim world that matters in the interest of Israel, but the single world "CRUSADE AGAINST ISLAM fanned by electronic medias during Bush regime in the Interest of Israel that ignited the bomb to explode in the Muslim world. Now the democratization of the Muslim world may not be very helpful for keeping the interest for Israel. In addition, it may lead to committal of repeated genocide by Israel.

Relationship of Muslim countries of Mid-East with US will remain cordial but will not in lieu of Israel's interest. If US bargains with grants for Israel's interest it will be taken otherwise by the Muslim countries.

Omar though a good hand will not be able to help up keep the Israeli interest after what Mubarek did during the last 30 years by helping Israeli interest.

The violence that descends amidst these crises must instruct all affluent and well-off people to be involved in their surrounding society and make sure that the society of which they are a part is a fair and equitable one. If they have not been involved, and instead have insulated themselves from the economic hardship their lifestyle creates for others---and they usually are a part of the problem, having incrementally created legal structures biased in their favor---then they should not be surprised when they are looted or killed. Revenge is a primal expression of mankind's desire to be free of any tyranny---it is a force of the universe. America's plutocracy is warned: You're next!

So Suleiman as intelligence chief would have been the one down in the torture chamber with the School of the Americas graduates extracting information from dissidents?  No wonder Egyptians are still in the streets.  Explain it to me if i've read this wrong, please.

Y'all make it really hard to love y'all. The idea of a foreign citizen attempting to reach out to the most powerful politically aware and active citizenry of the most powerful richest and most armed nation in the world should not be so shocking or unbelievable to y'all. The United States has a profound direct and hidden influence on the RoW every second of every day.

fyi - there are tonnes of foreign citizens on HP. Some of them are even community moderators.

"The President has made a number of calls to foreign leaders to discuss the ongoing situation in Egypt. On Saturday, January 29th, the President spoke to Prime Minister Erdogan of Turkey, Prime Minister Netanyahu of Israel, and King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia. Today, he spoke to Prime Minister Cameron of the United Kingdom. During his calls, the President reiterated his focus on opposing violence and calling for restraint; supporting universal rights, including the right to peaceful assembly, association, and speech; and supporting an orderly transition to a government that is responsive to the aspirations of the Egyptian people. The President asked each of the leaders that he spoke to for their assessment of the situation, and agreed to stay in close contact going forward."
