Fred Armisen As President Mubarak Of Egypt On SNL's Weekend Update (VIDEO)

As always, finding the potential for comedy in the midst of an ongoing tragedy is as difficult as it is dangerous. Fred Armisen, Seth Meyers and the Weekend Update team proved themselves equal to the task last night with an exclusive interview with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak (Armisen).

Portraying the 82-year-old president as an affably deluded near-dictator who has no idea how much he is disliked by his people, Armisen maintains that the people of Egypt love their president, and that the only reason they're unhappy is because the Internet is down thanks to Time Warner's poor service.

More pointedly, the sketch addresses the stranglehold that long-term governments often have on maintaining the status quo:

If I resign, what am I going to do? I've been an Egyptian president for 30 years. Is there another Egypt that needs a president that I don't know about?

The president then goes on to explain the steps he's prepared to take to solve the crisis, which include firing his cabinet, then rehiring it, and that's it.

One can only imagine that when this President Mubarak returns to Egypt to find that his wife, daughter and son Gamal, who had been considered a potential successor to the presidency, have all fled the country, he'll simply assume they popped out for an extended shopping spree in London.

You know I was thinking the same thing! Moses delivered the people out of Egypt and they STILL are under bondage? I heard they were making $2 a day. That is SICK! I don't know why the Egyptians are mad with America? We CANNOT interfere with the way a country runs their country. If the people let them treat them that way that is their business not Americas. American people get tired of our government meddling in other countries business.

Fred is always great. I think he is the most underated cast member in SNL history. The only reason I watch the fake news segment is in hopes he is spoofing Patterson or Obama and now I can't wait to see more Mubarak spoofs. The yes we can at the end was classic!

Fred Armisen is one of the most talented cast members ever to appear on SNL. He has played an incredible variety of characters and is usually spot on. I really liked his Prince.

Are there no middle eastern comics out there who could have portrayed Mubarek?

I asked a similar question when they did the Coneheads skits: Are there no aliens with conically shaped craniums they could use?
Then I figured out that its a weekly show with a regular cast and that they generally use, um, castmembers for their show.

If they couldn't find real aliens, then they shouldn't have done the skits, period. Using earthlings was blatant planetism.

Your actually pretty funny reply aside - using white boys in "blackface" to portray certain characters kinda went out of fashion about, um, 70 years ago. They did the same thing with the President Obama character. Really, SNL, don't you think it's about time you got on the diversity train?

All of these Saturday Night Lame videos are obvious and juvenile. Let's see some witty skits from some other show.

With your incredible wit you could write for SNL.

"More pointedly, the sketch addresses the stranglehold that long-term governments often have on maintaining the status quo"

If Mubarak was smart he would have done a better job of creating the illusion of a two party system and pitted the supporters of both "sides" against each other with toxic, inflammatory rhetoric. That would give the people a hobby to ensure they were oblivious while the country was looted.

Isn't it cute how Mubarak is now all over media, while hardly any of his dictatorial rule was ever addressed by these same media while he'd been fed by US taxpayers' dollars to imprison and kill his own. Another disposable dictator flushed down the drain, let's find another cute butcher friend...

Yes. I am astonished that this is presented as a new situation. And apparently it is new to a lot of people, at least people who hang out here.

The real Mubarak looks about 80 older!

30 more years! lmao This had me laughing so hard last night. The Bible joke was gold. Very good SNL for once. Jesse did better than I thought. He had something most hosts are missing, I just can't pinpoint what but he was great!
