UPDATE: Mubarak announces he will not run for reelection. Scroll down for live updates.

CAIRO -- More than a quarter-million people flooded Cairo's main square Tuesday in a stunning and jubilant array of young and old, urban poor and middle class professionals, mounting by far the largest protest yet in a week of unrelenting demands for President Hosni Mubarak to leave after nearly 30 years in power.

(SCROLL DOWN FOR THE LATEST UPDATES)

According to The Guardian, one million protesters gathered at Tahrir Square. One Al Jazeera correspondent said two million attended the protests in the square and its surrounding areas.

The crowds - determined but peaceful - filled Tahrir, or Liberation, Square and spilled into nearby streets, among them people defying a government transportation shutdown to make their way from rural provinces. Protesters jammed in shoulder-to-shoulder, with schoolteachers, farmers, unemployed university graduates, women in conservative headscarves and women in high heels, men in suits and working-class men in scuffed shoes.

They sang nationalist songs, danced, beat drums and chanted the anti-Mubarak slogan "Leave! Leave! Leave!" as military helicopters buzzed overhead. Organizers said the aim was to intensify marches to get the president out of power by Friday, and similar demonstrations erupted in at least five other cities around Egypt.

Soldiers at checkpoints set up the entrances of the square did nothing to stop the crowds from entering.

The military promised on state TV Monday night that it would not fire on protesters answering a call for a million to demonstrate, a sign that army support for Mubarak may be unraveling as momentum builds for an extraordinary eruption of discontent and demands for democracy in the United States' most important Arab ally.

"This is the end for him. It's time," said Musab Galal, a 23-year-old unemployed university graduate who came by minibus with his friends from the Nile Delta city of Menoufiya.

Mubarak, 82, would be the second Arab leader pushed from office by a popular uprising in the history of the modern Middle East, following the ouster last month of Tunisia's president.

The movement to drive Mubarak out has been built on the work of on-line activists and fueled by deep frustration with an autocratic regime blamed for ignoring the needs of the poor and allowing corruption and official abuse to run rampant. After years of tight state control, protesters emboldened by the Tunisia unrest took to the streets on Jan. 25 and mounted a once-unimaginable series of protests across this nation of 80 million people - the region's most populous country.

Ahram Online reports:

A spiritual leader of Somalia's Islamist Shebab rebels called for popular Egypt- and Tunisia-style revolts to topple the government.

Sheikh Jama Abdusalam said such uprisings would rid the war-wracked country of a government that he accused of serving Western interests.

"I am urging the people to carry out Egyptian- and Tunisian-style uprisings in Somalia," Abdusalam told Alfurqaan Radio, a Shebab mouthpiece.

Egypt's military rulers called for an end to strikes and protests Monday as thousands of state employees, from ambulance drivers to police and transport workers, demonstrated to demand better pay in a growing wave of labor unrest unleashed by the democracy uprising that ousted Hosni Mubarak's regime.

The statement by the ruling military council that took power from Mubarak appeared to be a final warning to protest organizers in labor and professional unions before the army intervenes and imposes an outright ban on gatherings, strikes and sit-ins.

Soldiers cleared out almost all the remaining demonstrators from Cairo's Tahrir Square, the giant traffic circle that was turned into a protest camp headquarters for the 18-day revolt. During more than two weeks of round-the-clock demonstrations at the square, protesters set up tents, brought in blankets, operated medical clinics and festooned the entire plaza with giant banners demanding removal of the regime.

A crowd of about 3,000 protesters, mainly lawyers and students, tried to march from Sanaa University to Al-Tahrir square in the city centre, where [Yemen President] Saleh's supporters have been camped since last week, but were prevented by security forces who erected barbed wire, witnesses reported.

In a move to manage the situation President Saleh halted constitutional procedures which may have allowed him to assume the presidency for life, and possibly pave the way for his son, the chief of the Republican Guard, to succeed him.

Two generals sat down Sunday night to talk about their country’s future with seven of the revolution’s young organizers — including the Google marketing executive Wael Ghonim — and the young activists posted their notes on the meeting directly to the Internet for the Egyptian public to see.

“We all sensed a sincere desire to preserve the gains of the revolution and unprecedented respect for the right of young people to express their views,” two of the young organizers, Mr. Ghonim and Amr Salama, wrote in their Facebook posting, with the disclaimer that they were speaking only for themselves. They noted that the generals spoke without any of the usual “parental tone (you do not know what is good for you, son),” and called the encounter “the first time an Egyptian official sat down to listen more than speak.”

It AMAZES me that the brigades of troĺĺies are so CLUELESS so as to think that all of these "private conversations" that took place DAYS ago between President Obama and Mubarak weren't ULTIMATUMS that he get lost?

Is their NAÏVETÉ so paralyzing to them that they HONESTLY think these games aren’t played all the time?

They REALLY should lay off of the pabulum they get from “Fox and Friends”, get to a LIBRARY (they can as any liberal where the nearest one might be)… sit down and have someone READ A BOOK to them once in a while.

At least they would be less apt to make COMPLETE NINCOMPȎȎPS of themselves…. But, then again, who would we have to RIDICULE, if not them??

Part 1 of 2:

ATTENTION ALL DITTTOHEADS!! ATTENTION ALL DITTTOHEADS!!
ATTENTION ALL DITTTOHEADS!!

Here is your new "Dittto-Pak" complete with everything you need to remain a D. I. G. S. (Ditttohead in Good Standing)... along with your orders for the day.

Please break the seal using your special "dittto-dagger".

In your Dittto-pak, you should find the following items:

(1) envelope containing your instructions from the MAN himself.

(1) envelope containing the web-site (s) you will be assigned to.

(1) plastic cỉígar to chomp on while you sit at your computer infesting those liberal sites with the MANS wisdom.

(1) set of fake earphones so you can feel like you're the MAN himself while parroting his WISDOM to the masses.

(6) kleenex tissues to wipe the beads of sweat off of your brow.. just like the MAN does.

(1) small bottle of GENUINE perspiration, wrung from the handkerchiefs of the MAN himself... complete with handy applicator to place beads of HIS sweat on your brow.

(1) packet of GENUINE melba toast crumbs... swept from the VERY floor beneath the MAN'S chair... so you can sprinkle them on your lap (if you can find it)... just like the MAN has.

(1) self-inflating lap to sprinkle the crumbs on to.
.

Part 2 of 2:

Please open envelope #1 & look at your secret "DITTTOS-OF-THE-DAY"...

They are, "MUSLIM BROTYHERHOOD", “OIL PRICES THROUGH THE ROOF”, “JIHADISTS”, “YOU LIBS” & of course our reliable standard, “TELEPROMPTER”.

As you know... no matter what the topic may be, you MUST use one of these phrases in your posts.

Be SURE you use the phrase "GeorgeWBush was right" at least once.

Failure to do so might jeopardize your D. I. G. S. status.

Please open envelope #2 & look at your assignment for the day.

It's THE HUFFFFYPUFFFFYPOOOPIE POST

Make SURE that your repeat your ditttos in response to any attempts that the liberals might make to engage you in an intelligent discussion.

Be SURE that you NEVER succumb to the urge to actually "debate" these people... they're SMARTER than you are & you could end up embarrassing the MAN if you do.

OK, now... Cígar... IN MOUTH!

Phones... ON EARS!!

Sweat.... ON BROW!

Lap.... on THIGHS!

Crumbs.... on LAP!!

GOOD LUCK.

Now.... DITTTOHEADS....

CHARGE!!!!!!

He doesn't necessarily have to leave his country, or even the service of his People. I understand the smooth transition thing to an extent, and he "could" be an asset for them. But maybe he should step down from the position as President and appoint himself as an official advisor to an interim choice of the People until the election. Many may feel that the election might be unfairly manipulated otherwise? Do the People expect complete transparency and Justice between now and then?

Again, how cleverly choreographed this dance between Mubarak and Obama is. Notice how Obama threaded his “suggestions” in between “goodwill” wishes when actually what he just accomplished for Egyptians is to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory when Egyptians were so very close to ousting this dictator and writing this chapter themselves now.

As I stated before Obama wouldn’t be calling Khamenei giving him suggestions on how he could get away with hanging on to power a little while longer with the pretext of a “smooth transition” and rob the people of the revolutionary moment of getting rid of the leader immediately, themselves!

Other revolutionary moments have occurred in other countries and the world didn’t come to an end after that! Why deny Egyptians what they really want?: TO GET RID OF MUBARAK NOW!

Oh yeah your precious "folk hero" sure is doing a good job of toying with Egyptian history and destiny, isn't he? If this isn't rife with political interest; I don't know what is. Once again, Obama is trying to please those who categorically stated in their press that Obama will be remembered for "losing Egypt"! And one has only to google that quoted clause to know which country is calling the sh0ts and who Obama is caving to!

Okay, just like the last time when Obama gave his little speech after suggesting to Mubarak that he shake up his government; AGAIN, Obama gives a little speech after suggesting to Mubarak that he not run in next elections. This is a carefully, crafted, staged charade that is denying Egyptians the victory they are yearning for.

=====

Too many Americans define strength as stridency, ignorant aggressiveness, posturing and making demands.

Time for Americans to mature and realize that strength for a President is staying calm and cool in the face of adversity. That is what we have now. This is a delicate situation that requires a steady hand. We have one.

But this is not about Americans, despite what Americans want. It is about Egyptians. This is their moment; not ours. This is about their President and not ours.

It is not always about America. Everything is not always about Obama. Egypt will find its own way.
