WASHINGTON (AP) — The red swimsuit that helped make "Charlie's Angels" actress Farrah Fawcett a 1970s icon is going to the Smithsonian in Washington.

Fawcett's longtime companion Ryan O'Neal donated the swimsuit and other items to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History on Wednesday. A 1976 poster of Fawcett in the dampened one-piece swimsuit sold millions of copies.

Also donated to the Smithsonian were Fawcett's copies of scripts for the first season of "Charlie's Angels" and a 1977 Farrah Fawcett doll.

The items will be part of the museum's popular culture history collection.

Fawcett died in 2009 at the age of 62 after battling cancer.

I am reading this article which is surrounded on the same window by modern pictures of the likes of so called modern stars, and there is no comparison with the dynamic of Farrah and the likes of them. She really had something special ! even in her later years.

Her brain was donated to the Harvard medical school. It wanted to see how it could survive all those years without a thought passing through it.

She didn't deserve what she got. Cancer is an evil and I wish they'd release or finally discover it's cure. As an actress, I did enjoy her work especially her made for tv movies.

I loved her tv movies. One of my favs was Small Sacrifices. She really had me believing she was Diane Downs. Cancer is an ugly, scary thing!

It's the poster that is iconic. She could have been wearing a sack and it would have been classic.

I read an interview with the photographer recently and he said they wanted her in a bikini, but Farrah did not own one, as she was embarassed by her appendectomy scar. The photos were taken at her poolside and the Mexican blanket was owned by the photographer and was in his truck.

That's interesting.
The swinsuit was certainly part of the equation and yes, many boys my age went nuts over the anatomical revelations.

But for me - growing up on the beach in SoCal - it was the hair, the smile, the tan, her face. Quintessential beach babe.

I was given a pillow with the same picture of her iconic poster back when I was in Grad School in Boston around 1977. I loved returning to the apartment and being greeted by her visage. I used to discuss 19th Century European Diplomatic History with her. She was a great audience. I miss her.
