NYC Weather: Ice Storm Causes Dangerous Commute, Flight Delays

Ice Storm Wreaks Havoc On NYC Flights

Another storm, another round of delays.

Icy conditions have prompted thousands of flight cancellations and delays at JFK, LaGuardia and Newark airports, according to CBS News and the Associated Press.

United Airlines canceled 850 flights, and Continental followed with around 600.

JetBlue canceled flights to and from JFK airport after Tuesday morning, but planned for some flights to resume by Wednesday afternoon.

The delays are compounded by even more prolific cancellations in Dallas and Chicago, which are both dealing with the same weather system wreaking havoc on New York air travel.

In all, about 6,000 flights were canceled Tuesday, and 3,000 on Wednesday, nationwide.

The effects are felt on the ground, too. NY1 reports:

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has issued a Winter Weather Advisory and New Yorkers are urged to take mass transit and to avoid driving on roads during and immediately after the ice storm. They should also allow for extra time to get around, take caution on transit platforms and stairs and carefully board trains and buses.

The storm did not bring happy news for children looking to score a day off from school. All New York City public schools are open.
