Joseph Gordon Levitt was Christopher Nolan's good guy in 'Inception' -- now, he might be turning bad.

The '500 Days of Summer' star is in talks to play an unnamed villain in the upcoming Batman sequel, 'The Dark Knight Rises,' Deadline.com reports. If he does join the cast, he'll be teaming up with another 'Inception' star-turned-villain, Tom Hardy, who is set to play Bane in the third caped crusader film from Nolan.

Anne Hathaway has already been cast as the future Catwoman, while Christian Bale, fresh off an awards show sweeping performance in 'The Fighter,' is set to reprise his role as Batman for the third time. Whether he plays Bruce Wayne beyond that is an open question -- even to Bale himself. In fact, if Levitt Gordon is cast, it'll be a rematch of sorts between two nominees for Best Supporting Actor at this year's Golden Globes.

Given his strong resemblance to Heath and his acting chops, I would not be surprised if he is recast as the Joker in a Cameo in Arkham. Most Batman fans said that months ago when they were talking about digitally recreating Heath's Joker for a Cameo.

Nah. If it was just a cameo then it wouldn't be this kinda press coverage...

I have loved these new Batman movies. I fear that they are about to ruin the third one by having too many story arcs. Catwoman, bane, and now another villian. This is in my opinion where the superhero movies fail. The first spiderman was ok, the later ones with sandman, venom, ggoblin, etc, too much going on. There is a lot of rich material in the Batman universe. If they wanted, they could do batman movies like they did James Bond movies. Focus on the story, not cramming 6 stories into one movie. Obviously they don't consult me.. for good reason.

A villain.

Huge sigh of relief.

I feared they were bringing in bat boy ... er ... I mean, Robin.

He's immensely talented, and this cast is shaping up better than I could have hoped. Good news all around.

I think Christopher Nolan knows what he is doing. He is a highly skilled filmmaker. The only thing that concerns me is that the expectation level for this movie is going to be in the stratosphere. I'm rooting for another unforgettable movie experience. Also, Nolan not being nominated for Best Director Oscar is just ridiculous.

If Christopher Nolan selected Anne Hathaway as Catwoman is because he has a good a reason for it, remember that a lot of people expressed doubts about Heath Ledger for the role of the Joker too but Nolan facilitated that Ledger delivered one of the most iconic performances ever recorded in film; working with Nolan, Anne Hathaway might surprise us too, anyway I have no doubt that Nolan will deliver a cinematographic master piece yet again.

Sounds like the third film will have too many villains. Just one should have been enough. I get the feeling this will be another bloated super-hero film, like Spiderman 3 and the Joel Schumacher Batman films.

Bringing in big stars might mean that the villain is introduced only to carry on to another film

We'll see. Personally I would be happy with Anne Hathaway in the Catwoman costume... and just one villain for the Batman film.

Word is this third Nolan Batman film is the last.

I think we can trust Nolan not to ruin his series like the examples you mentioned.

Also, Batman Begins dealt with Ra's Al Goul, Carmine Falcone and Scarecrow. The Dark Knight handled Joker *and* Two-Face (and Meroni? Does Meroni count?). While I'm always suspicious of BVCS (Bloated Villan Cast Syndrome), I think Nolan can make it work.

Im having the fear of BVCS myself, but you make a good point. I really hope you are right.

I've just loved JGL since his Third Rock days and am glad he's realizing the potential I saw in him back then. When he's on screen, I don't want to watch anything else.
04:53 PM on 02/02/2011
IF he's even in the film, it's not the Joker. I take Nolan for his word when he flat-out stated no Joker in the film. No subtle denials, he flat out said no. Nolan and Bale want no part of Dick Grayson either, so rule that out. I think Hugo Strange may well be in the film, but it's more likely Robin Williams, or someone like Williams, would play such a role. And JGL does not even REMOTELY resemble Strange. Riddler? Perhaps, but in all honesty, I see JGL in a fairly small role, perhaps even a cameo.

Villain overload.
