PLACERVILLE, Calif. — A school janitor was arrested Wednesday in the killing of a Northern California elementary school principal who was hailed as a role model for other educators.

No children were hurt in the late-morning shooting in the office at Louisiana Schnell Elementary School in Placerville, but one student may have witnessed the shooting, Police Chief George Nielson said.

Principal Sam LaCara, 50, died in the attack, Nielson said.

Authorities said they arrested janitor John Luebbers, 44, at his home about an hour after launching a manhunt. Investigators were trying to determine a motive for the shooting about 50 miles east of Sacramento.

LaCara, who died at Marshall Medical Center, was called a dedicated leader by Bob Wells, executive director of the Association of California School Administrators.

"Sam has been a role model to school leaders for his dedication to students and to public schools," Wells said. LaCara had served as a treasurer of the group.

Nielson was asked by reporters if Luebbers had been laid off. The chief said that possibility was part of the investigation, but he was uncertain about Luebbers' employment status.

"There may have been some kind of dispute between the principal and the custodian," Nielson said.

Police do not believe the janitor had a criminal history.

Nielson said LaCara's family was devastated. "They are requesting privacy at this time," he said.

Chaplain Jim Thompson met with the family at the hospital after being sent by law enforcement officers.

"They're very, very angry at the perpetrator, who they happen to know, (he) knew the principal very well," Thompson told KCRA-TV.

KCRA reported that LaCara, of Sacramento, was married and has three daughters.

California Highway Patrol Lt. Chuck King said LaCara's wife was driving on Highway 50 to the hospital after hearing about the shooting when she was pulled over by a CHP officer for speeding. Instead of being ticketed, she was escorted to the hospital.

The state's superintendent of public instruction, Tom Torlakson, thanked police and school officials for quickly securing the campus in the wake of the shooting. Classes were canceled at all district schools Thursday.

"Our schools should be safe havens from guns and violence, and I'm deeply saddened when harm comes to anyone working to educate California's children," Torlakson said.

Police also commended the school staff for quickly locking down the school and protecting the children. Students were taken to the county fairground, where they were released to their parents.

"The children were safe in this incident. The principal was the target in this, unfortunately," Nielson said.

A candlelight vigil for LaCara was planned Wednesday night outside a Placerville church.

This is just incredibly sad for his family, his school, his community -- all of us. I think it's disrespectful to use this as a forum for pithy, cute political commentary -- on any side. Maybe this is the place for compassion.

An Excellent example of what has happened to the public school system when God and prayer were removed.

So who on the nutty right will be the first to declare teachers, custodians, principals and kindergarten kids all need to be armed with guns to protect themseleves in the classroom?

I was going to say that you can't take a joke but obviously you can stomach Sarah.

It is symptomatic of people without the ability to engage in civil discourse or to have a sane argument that they resort to the ad hominem. Thank you for illustrating that point. Ta-ta.

Let's give everyone a gun so it would be easier to act on grievances, real or imagined. What do you say America?

More guns = less crime.

I suppose you think this to be a clever restatement of the NRA's position?

takes more courage to fight when you know your only weapon is a rock and you are fighting for your freedoms and liberty.

No, I agree with you completely. I think the only reason we don't have more actual demonstrations in favor if freedom and democracy is because people think the right-wing extremists will show up with loaded guns and attack them...

We cannot stop gun sales because it would make wealthy arms manufacturers less wealthy. What is wrong with you socialists!

The right to arms is a specifically enumerated right. Shall we stop/mandate the practice of religion? We could probably lower crime by ditching the 4th and 5th amendments-maybe they oughta go too?

Stopping the practice of religion, and gun sales would be fine with me. Lets just hold on to the Golden Rule, teach it in schools, and we should be fine.

I laugh when people say that "guns" don't kill people, people kill people. In this case, I'm pretty sure it was the gun that killed this guy. Solutions? Let's arm more people, let's arm the school security officers with guns now to make sure this stuff doesn't happen! And when the next gunman arrives at school we will now have a bunch of civilians popping off at each other but thats okay! Since guns protect people we wouldn't have to worry about innocent people getting clipped in the cross-fire from the shooting of average civilians. /sarcasm

In the early morning hours a man broke into a home and assaulted the woman inside, fondling her and tearing her clothing. She screamed and the man fled. The following night evil visited the home again. At 3 a.m. the woman's husband heard a loud noise and retrieved a firearm. As the suspect forced the back door open, the husband opened fire, killing him. Police believe the same suspect was involved in both incidents. (KVUE-TV, Austin, TX, 11/14/10)

Third incident that I've heard of at a school in CA this year, it's only the begining of Feb. No law makers plan to make any serious changes to gun laws, so guess it's gonna be business as usual in the USA when it comes to guns.

What change in the law would have prevented this? It's already illegal to bring a firearm to a school and it's already illegal to murder people. Waht reform proposed by the Brady Campaign et. al. could have prevented this?

One gun/month? Nope, he only used one gun.
Magazine capacity restrictions? Nope, he only needed a few rounds.
Close the non-existent "gun show loophole? Nope he had a clean record and could go to any FFL.

Had there been no firearm would the victim still be alive? Who can say. The janitor was younger and had the advantage of surprise. And a tool shed with axes, shovels, rakes, gasoline, welding torches and god knows what else so he probably stood a good chance of success.

I remember the celebrated ribbon cutting ceremony outside the school when our glorious politicians told us how safe we would be now that a newly enacted 'gun free zone' was adopted.
